A painful lesson

I didn't think it would happen to me.  But tonight I ate some chicken and then realized it was sticking in my pouch. I'm sure it was a combination of eating too fast and not chewing enough. I felt like I was gagging every few seconds. Then the discomfort would ease somewhat.. only to return seconds later. Eventually the time period between the gagging got longer.  I was bringing up phlegm.. (some of it containing the chicken).. but I did not vomit.  The episode ended after an hour.  I hope I learned a lesson.

Did anyone tell you that RNY surgery is the easy way to weight loss?

white meat is very difficult immediately post op, you might want to try dark meats, and stewed chicken instead.

Try Dinty Moore beef stew, pick out the big pieces of beef too big to eat. It is real tasty and agree with the pouch.

Welcome to the foamies!!  It is a good lesson to learn...a very fast learning curve.  You stand in front of the sink and spit and spit...hoping and praying you'll throw up.  We were talking about this on the RNY board the other day.  You can tell when you're about to get them because your nose will start to run, you'll get the hiccups, or you'll have a little burp.  Early on look for those signs and stop eating at once if any of those happen...wait a few minutes or a 1/2 hour and proceed with caution.  Fun times learning to retrain how you eat.  Brian

So what is a foamy exactly, a blockage?

The foamies are a bit hard to explain...but when you get them you will know.  I got them about 3-4 times the first few months post op.  You train yourself how to chew chew chew and eat slowly.  It can be hard to explain...below is a copy and paste.  You may want to Google foamies and RNY and see what comes up...that is what I did.  Brian

Default the foamies?
What exactly are the foamies?? You know, where after you eat, sometimes you'll try to burp, but liquid comes up and it's all foamy? __________________

yup, that is exactly what they are. It can also be accompanies by the slimies too. Where your mouth continues to water, but a more slimey substance than just saliva. This happened to me a couple times. It happened because I either ate too fast, or didn't chew good enough. For me personally, they did not go away until I threw up what was in my pouch. __________________

I call it slime. I had it lots early out from eating foods that didn't agree with me or eating too fast. Now I get every so often if I eat too fast. From what I know, our pouch does not have stomach acid to break down food, like with a stomach. We have this slime that helps break down our food and pu**** toward the intestine for absorbtion. I used to vomit up the slime sometimes and not the food. Its gross, but it does slow down a few months out.

I used to get it everytime I ate salmon. I can now eat salmon without problem. __________________

It occurs to lubricate your mouth pre-vomiting when you eat too fast or the wrong thing. You may not always vomit, but the foamies may inicate an early sign to stop and slow down. __________________

The foamies........definitely something to stay away from.  Pay attention to those cues that Brian mentioned.  Beware of chicken, especially chicken.....very insidious to the poor little pouch.  It's very difficult for the pouch to tolerate.  Take small bites and chew very well, take your time eating it. It helps to have it moist as well.

Foamies can put you back on the straight and narrow.  Also not chewing and eating to fast.  Thats will get a wake up call.  The nose running is a first sign that you screwed up.

WLS has its penalties.  Just try for the 5 yard penalty, dont foul for the 15 yard ones.  I got the shakes and sweats one time so bad along with pain I almost went to the ER.  Lasted about 2 hours.  It was the chicken corn chowder 3 mos out.
I'am almost a year out and am just now experimenting with new foods, my version of living on the edge.  I bought a KFC breast dinner.  Had 3 bites of chicken, potatoes and gave the rest to wifey.  No matter how much I chew chicken it is harder for me than NY strip
To each his own
Good luck

Speaking of foamies.. I had the problem Saturday night and have them today for almost 5 hours! Can "foamies" also be related to possibly having a stricture?  I chewed my boiled egg for lunch and felt fine and then about 20 minutes late it hit me hard! Right betweeen the girls and I am able to throw up the foam but it seems to build back up. I have been trying to do ice chips and no luck... I had gone to the store to buy and try some Papaya Enzyme chews.... nothing good is happening.... any suggestions?
