Why can't you lose weight on your own?

I return to work next week after a four week recovery from Lap RNY.  I can't help but think of some co-workers who just don't understand why I had the procedure.. especially after losing more than 100 lbs with a pre-op diet.  One lady I work with considers WLS "cheating".

Well, I needed the surgery because I did, and still have lousy eating habits.  I would "inhale" my food.
I would gulp down an 8 oz protein drink in less than a minute.  I could finish a meal in less than five minutes and not even think about it. I would eat what i wanted... how much I wanted.. when I wanted.

Now I can barely finish half of that 8 oz protein drink in a half hour.  I cannot tolerate much more than 3 oz of solid food at a sitting.  I got a reminder last night when I ate 2 ounces of chicken breast too quickly and without chewing enough.  I suffered a gagging effect for an hour, meanwhile spitting up chicken laced phlegm.  I was wondering if I would need to go to the hospital.

It's hard to break a 56 year habit of devouring food without some outside influence. I have chosen WLS to help me learn a new way of life.  I don't feel the need to explain myself to my colleagues. But if they are willing to listen, I'll be happy to spread the word.

"I would eat what i wanted... how much I wanted.. when I wanted."

You answered your own question... I know that sounds like who I used to be, and would still be today if not for WLS.  Its hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but it can be done. Cheating?  Ask your co-worker if she would use any means necessary to 'cheat' all manners of health problems and perhaps untimely death?  I bet she doesn't consider open-heart surgery cheating.  That kind of puts it in perspective.  We made a positive choice to improve our quality of life.  Keep on keepin' on!

I explain it like this to people.  Multiple times in my life when i put my mind to it i've taken off 100+ pounds.  Can't count how many times i've taken off 50+.  My issue hasn't been loosing the weight, its been keeping it off.  The statistical curve on keeping the weight off with this TOOL is the exact opposite of loosing it yourself and keeping it off over just a 5 year time frame.  My goal is to get it off and KEEP IT OFF.

... And... if they don't except that... then F'em.  I'm doing this for myself, my wife and my kids.  I never really asked for their opinion any way LOL.

Congratulations on your surgery !!! Keep up the GREAT WORK!!

Wouldn't even explain it....their jealous so F'em and enjoy the new you!  People that truly care about you will be extatic with your decision and the evoloving you!

You owe no one an explanation for wanting to be healthier and taking a tremendous step toward making that happen!

I haven't had anyone directly tell me they disapproved of my WLS but I'm sure some think it. I don't what that mindset is about. How can you "cheat"? This isn't a game, it's our lives. No one is keeping score.
