Muscle Loss
I'm looking for info on WLS related muscle loss.
I know it's basically to do with the decrease in protein that you're able to consume in the months following WLS... my nurse told me it can be fairly drastic with guys in the first 4-6 months before they start building it back...
so just looking for maybe some other info out there on the why/how it happens, and ideas for ways to start building it back up.
My arms were never huge... and now, what I have on them is all muscle, but for example; where I could curl 3 sets of 15 reps at 50-60 pounds pre-op, now I can't even do the same at 30 pounds.
What have some of you veterans experienced on this?

I'm two weeks behind you on the surgery date and I've experienced the same issues. Pre-op I was one of the "Big Dogs" in the gym now I'm almost ashamed to go in there. I asked my surgeon about this and she said that it's perfectly normal and that I need to get in the gym and work like crazy. She said that I need to take in the protein and nutrients like a body builder. She said that if I try I will rebuild the muscle mass. Lately I've just been focusing on cardio but as the Fall turns into Winter I'll hit the weights more and more.

i'm almost at a year now, it took a solid 9 months for me to start seeing some gains in the strenght department and then it was slow going. in the past month or so, i've finally felt like my old self strength wise, albeit at slightly lower weights on the big execises like bench and squat. on the other hand, after i shed around 200 lbs, i can do a bunch of dips, pushups, and crunches :) i suggest getting in the gym early and often if nothing else to maintain and lessen the muscle/strength loss so you are starting from a base instead of nothing.
Where are we going?? And why am I in this handbasket??
right now. somewhere. somebody is working harder than you.

I've definitely lost muscle mass, it's partly my own fault for not doing weight training sooner. Most of the exercise I was doing the first few months after surgery was walking, bike riding, etc. I've been doing weight training every other day for the last week and a half and I'm already seeing a difference.
I don't have the strength I had before and my arms and legs are like sticks. Aerobic exercise is a lot easier without all the extra weight and the increased energy though. I'm taking in 100 grams of protein a day right now and I'm going to try to stick to going to the gym a lot to build myself back to normal. My body fat percentage is really high right now - I've gotten into the "skinny-fat" zone. I look okay with clothes on but if you see me with a shirt off I'm still a fat guy. I'm downright scrawny in my extremities but I still have a jiggly round belly.
