DENIED!
Well I've been waiting for my phone call from the surgical team to let me know the big news. I am denied because I haven't been over 40 BMI for longer than 2 years. They said that since I didn't have sleep apnea or diabetes, that joint disease and GERD was not good enough reasons to approve me. So, I will keep my chin up, and just go back to bouncing between diets and hoping to loose some weight before it kills me.
I assume that your denial letter is from your insurance company. Check out what your rights are regarding the appeals process. In many cases, you can win on appeal without even hiring an attorney. You can eventually decide if you want to go that far. But, if you don't act soon enough on the first step on an appeal, you may have to start over from the beginning.
That being said, I urge you to get the Beck Diet Solution in either hardcover or workbook. I generally feel that the hardcover is better for newcomers and the workbook for post-ops. I didn't know that and got both of them. Even the author says that's not necessary. Beck's is not a diet; rather, it contains strategies for staying on a diet. The simple premise of the book is that most of us don't stay on a diet because we don't know how to do so. I agree to an extent. If you are a food addict, you may need additional help. I suggest Kay Sheppard's book called Food Addiction--The Body Knows. And, what the body know is that if you eat something you are addicted to, you will probably continue to do so regardless of your willpower. Stopping food addiction is as hard or even harder than breaking other addictions. I remember going to OA and hearing many recovering alcoholics and/or drug addicts talk about how much easier it was to give up their other addictions.

Use this time to change your eating habits for good. Maybe you will be able to make enough changes to lose some weight and keep it off. I believe that I could have lost and kept weight off if I made the following changes pre WLS.
Eat small amounts often. - measure your food so you eat the portion sizes on the packages. Meats should be consumed at a 4oz serving size (not a 12 oz steak). If you can eat the smaller amounts at each meal you can eat 5 meals per day and keep your metabolism burning calories at full strength all day long.
Stay away from processed carbs like chips and candy.
NO fast food, if you have no other choice skip the fries and the top bun.
If you try to eat like us post opps have been forced too it may work for you. We have all learned quite a bit about nutrition after WLS and most of it works even without surgery if you can control portion size.
Keep us informed, we are here to help.

I agree with sjbob this is not the doctors doing. If it was they would have told you at your first visit. This is the insurance co. behaving like an ass.Believe me when I say that. I am jumping through hoops because of them. Call your insurance co. and see what the requirements are. Then talk to your doctor or whoever recommended WLS and see what they can do with helping with your appeal.
