Hair loss-thinning on top?

I know that they say the hair loss comes around the 3 to 6 month mark.  I don't think that I've really lost much if any and I'm at about 5.5 months out.  I keep my hair really short and it's very fine hair so it looks thin on top with it cut that short.  They usually use a #5 guard on the top and a #3 on the sides.  I just wonder did you guys lose any hair?  If you did, did it grow back?  Have you used Rogaine?  I was told that once you start using it you have to keep using it or your hair will fall out.  Is that true?

Duane,

Never used the Rogaine so I'll be no help there.  I keep mine in a flat top.  #1 in the side and "as low as they dare go" on the top.  Usually I have to tell them to take it lower.  I want to feel a wire brush when I rub it with my hand. What I noticed is that while I did have some thinning early out at 18 mos the thinning stopped long ago but my hair does not grow near as fast as it used to.  Unfortunately seeing more damn salt than pepper now too!  I can handle it turning colors as long as it doesn't turn loose!

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

I think it is a problem some have and some don't. I did have a lot of thinning, luckily I had really thick hair. It never has came back to what it was, but it is better. I started and continue to take Biotin. It is one of the B vitamins and it helps your body process protein. I think it has helped. I have long hair, think hippie biker type. I would get it cut but it would make to many people happy.

I've been very religious about taking my vitamins and all of my protein.  I began taking fish oil and a vitamin with biotin about two weeks ago.  I asked the Nut. about hair loss and she said that it's really due more to the stress of the surgery.  She said that hair regenerates every three months so that's why it usually shows up as a loss at the three month post op time and why after six months it usually starts to grow back.  She said that it doesn't hurt to take the other vitamins but I'm probably wasting my money.  My three multi vitamins per day should suffice.  I've always had a lot of hair, it's just very fine and now with it cut so short I'm noticing that it seems thin.  The girl that cuts my hair said that she doesn't notice any change.  What can I say other than I'm vain.

Hi Duane,

I had kind of a second bald spot form right on the top of my head from 3 months to about 4.5-5 months.  I've had a bald spot in the normal spot in the back but it was odd having a second one form on top.   However, I'm at 6 months now and just in the past month the new one has filled back in.

Here is a post that I see Valerie G make anytime someone asks the question about hair loss.   It explained it pretty well for me.

First of all, the hair loss at this stage is very normal and likely to end very soon.
Telogen Effluvium is characterized by sudden, diffuse hair loss caused by an interruption in the normal hair growth cycle. This interruption is often the result of trauma, such as chemotherapy, childbirth, puberty, crash diets, major surgery, severe stress, and severe chronic illness. This trauma causes large numbers of hair follicles to enter a stage of telogen, or rest, simultaneously. After roughly 3 months of the telogen cycle the follicles will enter the anagen cycle, a stage of growth. The old hair will be forced out of the follicle by a new hair that is formed beneath it. This will cause a period of diffuse hair shedding. This condition is usually self correcting and can affect people of all ages."

Never tried Rogaine but I'm guessing that it wouldn't have an impact on this type of hair loss since it attempts to address the male pattern baldness issues.   In our post-surgery case, the hair loss is actually caused by the new growth coming in
