Protein vs. Carbs vs. Fat
Does anyone want to weigh in with their experience on nutrition balance in the early days after surgery?
I ate the following today:
6 oz Organic nonfat unflavored yogurt.
A couple of servings of a tasty peanut butter-banana shakes. (Recipe from my diet handbook from the Cleveland Clinic)
8 oz of Muscle Milk Lite Protein Drink
8 oz low sodium organic chicken broth.
12 oz G2 Low Cal Gatorade
Here's how all of that breaks down:
53% of my calories from 62.5 grams protein
22% of my calories from 25.5 grams carbs
25% of my calories from 13 grams fat
Total: 612 Calories
My question is: Is there a recommended percent balance of Carbs, Fat and Protein in the first few months after RNY? Or does anyone see any signs of dangerous habits in today's menu?
My doctor wants me to avoid carbs and go heavy on the protein.

Not sure, but I've seen a bariatric food pyramid listed on this site. I've got it bookmarked if you want me to post the link.
I pulled out my pre-op handbook from Dr. Lord's office. They (as I'm sure most surgeon's do) pride themselves on their nutritional program, saying that they have excellent long term results. Here's what my instructions are after I get my Rny revision...
Physical Activity minimum of 5 times weekly for 30 minutes.
Multi-vitamin with Iron twice daily.
Calcium Citrate 2000mg daily or 500 mg 4 times a day.
B12 2500-3000mcg per week.
Iron supplement per Dr's instructions daily with 250 mg Vit C.
Non-Carbonated/Sugar Free/Decaf beverages.
Consume 3 meals and one night snack daily. NO snacking or grazing. NO skipping meals.
Skim or 1% milk (soy is alright, too, according to the nutritionist).
Consume less than 16 grams of TOTAL(not Net) carbs per serving.
Consume 2-3, 20 gram protein supplements daily until your protein increases at your meals.
Decrease protein supplements as your protein intake increases.
Continue to drink one protein shake a day for 5-6 months.
Drink 65 to 70 ounces of water (or other liquid that adds to your water totals) per day.
Stop drinking 30 minutes before meals and start again 30 minutes after you finish your meal.
60-70 grams of protein per day for men. ALWAYS eat protein first.
Pureed/Soft diet day three to six weeks.
Looks like they want me to do 64 total carbs per day if the snack is included in the 16 grams per serving. I have a very detailed list of foods and such if you need any other suggestions for your eating program. Looks like you are right on track. Not sure if you carbs are total or net, but I think the lower the carb ratio, the better. Interesting to see how different surgeons want people to eat, anyway!
Edit...I just realized I posted this to the men's forum. Sorry Guys! I just linked to this post from my friends list and did not realize it was the men's forum until after I posted!! Sort of like walking in the men's restroom by mistake...

As a newbie post opp don't worry about calories. Do as the Doc ordered, get in as much protien and water as possible, and avoid sugars. A few months from now you can worry about getting enough of the right fats and fiber. For now follow docs orders, and don't make this more work than you have too.
Robert
I ran into the NUT at my 1 month followup with Dr. Schauer, and asked her a question about something similar. She said to focus on the protein and liquid and not worry about anything else. If you do the protein and liquid, you won't have much space for anything else for another month!
