Hello,

Somewhat new to the site and was planning on having RNY paid for by my insurance around the 1st of the year, well now due to some insurance complications I may be a self pay client. I talked to my surgeons office today and they suggested that I look into VSG now that I would be a self pay. I am 34 yrs old , 382 pounds with a plus 52 BMI...is there anyone out there that has seen success with the VSG at or around my weight ??

with a bmi of 52 you could self pay for a DS...which would be a much more appropriate surgery for someone your weight.

Scott,

Thanks for the response I have also been researching DS and at the current time I have not been able to locate a surgeon in Colorado and I'm concerned about follow up care if I had to go out of state.  I will keep looking and researching...

I had the Lap - VSG and I was selff pay, LOL, I was 399 day of surg and I am 37.  As of today I am 331. Lost 36 on preop liquid diet for a total of 104 lost.

I can eat anything I want if I chose to. I made a lifestyle change.  I dont dump as people with the bypass type surgeries do.  Not knocking them.  All I need to take is a Multi Vit and Calcium.

Sleeve is the first part of the DS. They gave super high BMI people the frst part to get their weight down so they could come go back and get the 2nd part when they were in a safer operating range. Well they showed signifiant losses and didn't need the second part.

I Started at a 6x shirt - 3x now
Pant 58ish  - Guessing 48 now still wearing very loose 52 shorts
Shoes 14 now a 13

Good luck

I had VSG surgery a few months ago. The day of surgery, I weighed in at 392. Last week, I was at 343. I would give a more current update but my scale broke and I had to wait for the replacement to get here.

Anyway, there were a number of reasons why I chose the VSG, self pay being one of them. I just happened to live within driving distance of a skilled VSG surgeon who offers one of the lowest prices in the US, so it worked out pretty well.

Having a high starting weight and BMI didn't scare me off from this surgery. There have been many OH posters who have started this high or higher that have had great success with the sleeve. As far as eating goes, yeah you do need to make permanent changes to the way you eat in order to be successful, but isn't that true of any surgery? You could cheat and "eat around" any WLS. But if you use the sleeve correctly, I think it's a great option. I am happy with it so far.
