Pre op blues

Wow.. This 800 cal per day pre-op liquid protien diet really has me on the edge.  I'm starting my fifth day of it. I still go to work. (desk job) and I walk about an hour a night.  Sometimes I don't feel mentally alert. Last night I stooped over to tie my shoe.. (which I couldnt do a few months ago). When I stood up, I got a bit dizzy.  Would any of you guys share your pre-op diet experiences?

When I was doing the Optifast diet I also would get a bit light headed. What did the trick for me was upping my water intake.

water here, water there, water, water everywhere, might as well get used to sip, sip, sip, cause next comes the train part, CHEW, CHEW, CHEW.  I was allowed lettuce for dinner, but 22 days of that, I was feeling bunny tail on my hiney and my front teeth started to look like they were protruding.  Your mind will play tricks on you, and with time, you will discover how little your body can function on.  Dizzy does equate with needing more water, but remember, your body is shifit gears so your mind will play tricks on you.  Best of luck, Stephanie

The dizziness could be do to dehydration. I know there for a while I would bend over and straighten up slowly just in case. Dehydration drops your blood pressure and while I was still on blood pressure meds I would get dizzy and just about black out. That's when I started monitoring my blood pressure and brought it to my PCP's attention and he took me off it.

I had the same thing.  At the time, I was taking metformin, a prescription for metabolic syndrome (kind of a pre-diabetic diagnosis in my case).  In the first five days of my 800 cal phase, my blood sugar dropped from fasting 125 to non-fasting 86.  The latter was on the day I had all my pre-op labs and the last visit with Schauer.  That day, nine days pre-surgery, he took me off the metformin and I had no trouble with dizziness after that.

Not knowing if you are diabetic and depending on how long until your pre-op appointments, you might want to call the nurse on duty and check on the lightheadedness.

If it weren't for being out of town on vacation around the time of your surgery, I would have planned to come up to the Clinic to say a post-op "hi".  We ministers love roaming hospital halls, you know.  I'll be in Texas, but I'll look for your post-op report!
Onward and DOWNward,

Thank you Mr Burke. I appreciate your thoughts.  I am not diabetic.. but am on blood pressure meds. I see Dr. Schauer Tuesday for the pre op appointment and will get an update on meds then.

But all of you are correct. I increased my water intake today.. and it did help me feel less light headed today.  I'm working on my 4th liter of water as I write. This forum is great. Thanks to all.
