I had a totally different experience working for the Fed govt. I worked for a small agency called the US Railroad Retirement Board. It was originally started to administer unemployment benefits to railroad workers because many of them couldn't get enough time in any one state to qualify. Plus, many jobs are season--such as rail crews.
We had to account for every penny in our budget. Because our office serviced SE PA, S Jersey, and all of DE, we had a govt car. Whenever we took it out, we had to keep a detailed account of mileage from office to various destinations and return. We'd get reimbursed for any expenses as long as we had receipts. Any expenses would be examined.
I guess that's the difference in not working for the DOD.
