Calories per day after RNY
My name is Mike, and I am a calorie counter.
Yes.. It seems to be working for me now. I undergo RNY in two weeks.
Could any of you fine gentlemen tell me how many calories you consume when you have reached your weight goal? It seems that people on the main board (mostly women) eat fewer than 1000 per day. What is it for men and can you function without weakness and being light headed?

Hi Mike,
I don't have a clue. When I went to solid foods after my RNY I measured and weighed every thing. In doing so I learned what a proper portion size is. I do look at labels and have a basic idea of how many calories each food is and how much of each I want to eat. For instance I buy a 2 pound block of sharp cheddar cheese and cut it up into four 8 oz bars and then cut each of those into 1/2 oz servings. 2 cubes is an oz.. If I have a cheese snack for the day I grab 2 cubes and maybe 2 or 3 olives to go with it.
1000 calories doesn't seem realistic. I just had breakfast, yogurt 80 calories,1/2 cup cereal 70 calories, no sugar added apple sauce 50 calories, 1/4 cup blueberries 20 calories and 2 Tbls of flax seed mill about 50 calories I think. So that is is a total of 270 calories. I can see 1000 calories or less while losing weight but a goal I would think it is twice that.
I don't count calories but I do weigh my self every morning. I weighed my self once a week while losing weight but once I reached my goal weight I started weighing every day.
I tell every on you have to make permanent life style changes. I learned new eating habits on my pre op diet and after surgery. I only ate what the nutritionist had on the list to eat. The first year I walked the straight and narrow so to speak. Did exactly what the nutritionist's plan called for. I was at goal in a year.
As a former member here use to say I now eat a normal diet and portions a normal person would eat. Not a whole half gallon of ice cream or a whole pizza or 2 value meals, so the person at the drive thru window would think I was buying on for some one else.

It obviously depends on your age and activity level. The USDA figures on cereal boxes quote an average of 2,000 cal per day. I've read of men here who are maintaining and stay around 2400 cal. Some of the more active men go around 2700 cal. When I was losing weight earlier this year I was staying between 1,600 and 1,800 cal; I lost 50 lbs from Feb through mid May being inactive and 4 years post op on RNY. By the way, I'm 59.
Depends on your height, age, activity level, etc...
I'm 6'6" and ate under 1000 calories/day until I hit goal...never had any issues w/ weakness.
I've been maintaining for nearly a year and I now eat 2500-3500 calories/day.

MY STORY: imthebiggestloser.blogspot.com/
Never counted calories. I am 3.5 years post-op and maintain an average weight of 205. I eat a very, very high protein diet and minimal carbs. I usually consume between 130 and 180 grams of protein a day. This has worked for me, but everybody has their own way of working the program.
I went from 432 pounds 2 weeks pre-op to 175 pounds (total of 257 pounds) in about 14 months. I put the extra weight back on from working out/muscle gain.
Good luck to you.

I'm 21 months post-op. I'm 49 y/o, 6'2", and currently weigh 275, down from 455 pre-op.
I got down to 255 at my lowest. I've gained back up to as much as 281 which was 3 wks ago. I've lost 6 lbs in the last 3 wks through vigorous exercise.
To answer your question, I'd imagine that from about a year out to right now, I've averaged 28 - 3500 calories per day. I used to log calories through dailyplate.com early on in the journey but have quit. Probably ought to start back.
During the last 3 wk period where I've lost those six pounds, I've probably eaten 2800 per day, but I'm exercising off at least 1000 of them.
Hope that gives you something to look at and chew on.

The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
