Been a while - but feeling great!

Hi guys,

It's been a while since I have posted anything over here in the locker room.  I had my gastric bypass surgery on August 4th.  Today, I am down 40 lbs and feeling absolutely fantastic.  No complications, not too much pain and no food issues.  To top it all off, I was diabetic before my surgery, and I left the hospital off all four of my diabetes meds.  I almost wanted to kiss my endocrinologist when he told me this!!

Anyway, I am currently eating only pureed food, and am very much looking forward to starting on soft foods in a few weeks.  How did you all know when you were ready to progress to the next stage of your diet?

Also, I am quickly going through all of the "small clothes" in my closet, and am not really looking forward to shopping for clothes that are really only going to fit me for a few weeks.  What did you guys do about clothes when your weight was dropping real fast in the beginning?

I look forward to your responses.  Thanks...

Phil

The nutritionist gave me a schedule of what to eat for how long and I just followed it. Seems like three on the pureed foods is what I remember.

I bought a lot of clothes at thrift stores. Some are more organized than others, but you can find some good stuff at great prices. My wife is big into the thrift stores and I would go with her prior to surgery. It was harder to find stuff when I was a size 54, but I would. Now it's easy. I have a pair of leather pants I use for motorcycle riding I bought for $12.

I had mine the same day as you. My diet is as follows:

2 weeks clear liquids
2 weeks full liquids (I'm still here)
2 weeks pureed
2 weeks soft
Then full diet, or just what I can tolerate.

Mine appears more restrictive, although I have had zero problems, other than bad breath.

I am dealing with the bad breath too.  I bought those Listerine PocketPaks, and I take one after I eat of drink any protein, especially when I am at work.

Wow, two weeks of clear liquids!!!  That must have been rough.  I only had to go through two days of clear liquids.  For my puree stage, my nut. said it should last for 3-6 weeks.  B/c I am doing so well, I would love to move on to the next stage after three weeks, but should probably wait out the 6 weeks.  We'll see...

I don't know if you know what is up with the bad breath, but it is ketosis, which is an indication of starvation, which is normal. As long as we get the required protein we are ok. A by-product of the ketones is the acid in our blood that has to be excreted in our breath. If you are looking for something that will help try CloSYS dental products. There is a toothpaste, mouth wash and breath spray, and they work great. I used them and that night my wife actually noticed my breath did not stink. Of course in the morning the mouth is pretty bad, but thaty spray does not just mask it, it nuetralizes it.
