Longest Pre Op liquid/protien bar regime
My BMI was 54 pre-op. My doc did not require a liquid diet prior to surgery. I did have to do a six month pre-cert for my ins. co. I had to see a dietitian and doctor for six months and show I could stick to a diet. I was on a low fat diet to shrink my fatty liver. I lost 39 lbs. on it. It was a good way for me to get my self ready for permanent life style changes.
12 weeks on a liquid diet does seem like a long time. I would start making a list of things to ask at your next visit and put that one at the top of the list.
My highest weight was 375, I now maintain around 165 to 170. I go up and down a lot where I run, but it is something I have to watch every day. Unfortunately it is true what they say about they operate on your gut not on your head. I still have to watch what I eat and not go back to my old ways.

When I started my liq. diet I made a lot of different types of broth and put them in small containers and poped them in the freezer.
Beef
Chicken
beef taco flavored
Chicken taco flavored
Any type you want. Then I would add unflavored pro powder to them just to boost the pro level ( One thing I learned is dont add the pro powder before you heat it , add after you heat otherwise it will wind up looking like cottage cheese in what ever type of broth )
I found the beef broth really helped when your really wanting a steak.
If you take the broth and put in a pot , bring it to a rolling boil and let it reduce by half you now have stock and this will help with the craving. ( a little )
Good health and best wishes

I would question 12 weeks cause that is insane.. I was on a liquid diet for 6 weeks and there is no way I could have done another day.. LOL the day they told me to start the liquid diet I went to the bakery and bought 4 Cannoli's...
Sugar free Jello, SF Jello Pudding, SF popsicles, Crystal lite and water will all help you get through the day. lol I made jello with the crystal lite for more flavor.
As the other poster said. Make your own stocks. I made my own from low sodium bullion. I froze the soup in wonton soup containers. I boiled a chicken. saved the meat for later in the surg then chopped up and boiled the bones added veggies for flavor then strained them off.
Now I did cheat but I boiled chicken livers. Ate salmon jerky and beef jerky. Laughing cow cheese, its soft and is close to liquid when chewed. lost 36lbs
Don****ch TV or go to a BBQ cause you will die.. and stay off the food network...
Do not take any vitamins on the liquid diet, will make you sick.

I've done liquids for more than 12 weeks before. There's a weight loss clinic in Austin that used HMR shakes. It took lots of coaching and support from the clinic to keep going that long. You can't do it on your own. When I was doing it, we had weigh-ins and meetings twice a week. After a couple of months, the little cheats here and there start to gang up on you and the cravings get pretty bad. I lost about 80 pounds, but then I couldn't take it anymore and quit. I slowly gained back most of the weight and tried it again for a few weeks but couldn't handle it.
I guess my point is, if you really want it, it can be done. However, you will need a proper support system, and it will be expensive. I was paying about 800 bucks a month for my program between the shakes and the fees for the clinic visits.

Prior to my original RNY, I had a BMI of 89. My surgeon, who was president of the assoc of bariatric surgeons that year did not believe in going on any kind of diet prior to surgery. It was his contention that that was what the surgery was for. Oh, I did say prior to my original surgery...I eventually needed to have a revision due to a staple line disruption and the sugeon who did that RNY (different surgeon since original one no longer accepted my HMO) did not believe in pre-op diets either.
I just remembered that before I even saw the first surgeon, I had gone to a local surgeon who had a rule about losing 50 lbs prior to WLS. I couldn't do it and he gave me a list of several docs who would. I'm glad I didn't give up because I am now still enjoying the benefits of over 200 lbs net weight loss.
