Protein first, right?

I know the rule is protien first!

How much protein (in grams) is recommended for RYN patients?  What about carbs and fat (in grams)?

Based on some of the things you guys have wrote in the past, it would seem to me that you only have "room in the pouch" for the protein.  If you stuffed after the protein, how do you get in your carbs and fats?

Maybe I have missed something along the way.

Take Care & Good Luck,
Jason

You will find it really really hard to get in all your protein first...I would say 70-80% of RNYers can't get it all in the first few weeks or months (just do your best).  That is why the protein shake is so important.  It needs to be made for whey protein isolate.  Whey protein allows more absorption than almost any other protein.  It is easy to digest (though it taste nasty or gross).  I would mix mine with milk (the milk will add to your liquid requirement).  The carbs and fat you really can't worry about the first few months...that is why the weigh come off so fast.  I was able to add a small amount of cooked spinach or broccoli to my meals.  You'll need to work on the protein first to try and prevent the loss of muscle mass...which can occur since you are dropping the weight so quickly.  Brian

Contrary to Cabin Brian , my nut wanted me off protein shakes as soon as possible because of the high caloric density when a lot of ingredients are involved.  So instead of doing shakes, I occasionally add powder to cottage cheese and other things to boost the protein count.

That's why we have to each follow our surgeon's and nut's program rather than mix around everything we hear here!

I am to get 60 grams of protein per day.  The base line for a meal for me is 3 oz of protein (a piece the size of a deck of cards) plus 1/2 cup of veggies.  At 7 grams of protein per ounce, the 9 ounces per day tops the 60 gram mark.  "Protein first" doesn't mean you can't have a veggie until momma has checked your plate for protein consumption - it means don't fill up on the non-proteins to the extent that you can't eat your protein.  Some meals I don't want to eat everything; other meals I'll add some extra veggies or protein.

So far, nothing has been said to me about counting carbs or fats - other than to avoid fats like the plague.  The protein is the main stuff you need as it is the most complete food there is.  That's what we need to focus on, according to my nut, and if we do that, the carbs will take care of themselves.

So I would suggest the bottom line is that you don't worry about carbs or fats.  Start wrapping your mind around protein!

Should add that I started weaning off protein shakes during the puree/soft food phase.  They were the staple of my liquid phase.

It's going to be physically impossible to get enough protein without some sort of supplement... either by adding powders to your foods or from protein shakes.

when eating meals, I've heard a good general rule of thum... "three and one", for every three bites of protein, take a bit of something else (veg, fruit, etc).

The Snickers Marathon Protein bars are bout the best I've tried. 20-22g of protein, no after taste, bout 280 calories. Not really a "just a snack" item, but good for a meal replacement or those days you're being extra active and need a boost.

I would be careful with that Snickers Bar, just looked it up and at 17grams of sugar, may not be the best choice.

I use GNC protein powder every morning, and usually grind in some frozen fruit like raspberries. Very little sugar, 100 calories per 20 grams of protein plus the calories of skim milk.  My NUT says I can stop when I want to, but I still enjoy this on most mornings.

At my Year check up, I had 7.5 percent fat and was doing great with my lean muscle mass.

Just check the labels on those drinks, they are not all equal when it comes to the sugar.

You have to remember that we're all different - some are way more active than others. When you're trying to maintain or add lean muscle, you have to have extra protein, much more than the amount the Nuritionists require after surgery. Some Nuts say 70 grams, others 80, others 90, etc.  In order to get in enough protein to do my weight workouts and add lean muscle, I drink 1 to 2 Myoplex protein shakes every day.  It has worked great for me.

Obviously, Doctors and Nutritionists don't want you to rely on protein supplements as your only source of protein, but the shakes and powders sure help get the amount required in. Just my $.02!
