Good Evening All :)

I had my RNY on Monday and came home yesterday afternoon.  Honestly things so far have been just fantastic.  Because of my size and weight the thought was they were going to do my surgery as an Open but ... they were able to do it Laprisopically.  That was GREAT NEWS.   My roomate in the hospital had the same procedure just before me and we talked and connected on a ton of issues.  It made things so much easier talking to someone going through same thing as i was.  I can't say pain was minimal but with the use of Morphine and then Percoset things were more than bearable.  Now i'm home and well on the way to recovery.  I know i have lots ahead of me but i'm still pretty excited.  I'm on clear liquids through today but start regular liquids tomorrow, including protien shakes (Does anyone recomend a certain kind of protien shake?).  I have my follow up appointment next Thursday.  Any help or suggestions going foward would be awesome.

Thanks All !!

Good news.  A few pieces of advice.  You probably won't be able to get in all your water or protein.  We all know that, your doctor knows that...just try and do your best and you should be fine.  It is hard to find a good protein shake...very hard.  Most will taste crummy.  What I suggest is to write on your local (state) OH board...find out when the local support group meets.  Ask if anyone could share their favorite protein shakes with you.  So you can sample different ones...see which one you like (or can stomach) and buy it.  So many people waste big bucks looking for the right shake.  One last assignement...since in the next few weeks you will be climbing the walls with bordom.  Look up the signs of a stricture and look up the signs of dehydration.  You can Google them if you want to.  Just so you are aware of these things and they don't creap on you without warning.  Usually not a problem...just know the warning signs.  Enjoy the ride.  Brian

Welcome to the losers bench!

Your taste buds change with surgery.... So as has been sugested try out the samples to find the one's that work best for you.

I used Isopure zero carb drinks for the first week you can pick them up at GNC and most Supplement stores. 40g of protein in a 20oz drink with zero carbs and zero sugars.

I found the Designer Whey products available at GNCs or at RiteAid to be the most palatable for me.  My fave recipe was to blend a cup of skim milk, a scoop of chocolate designer whey, a packet of low carb chocolate instant breakfast, three ice cubes (for froth and to make it cold) and one tablespoon of creamy peanut butter.  It was like drinking a Reese's Cup and was about 25 grams of protein!  Drink the shakes slowly - make them last the length of a meal.  You have all the time in the world!

Go to bariatriceating.com to find a lot of recipes for shakes.  Use whatever powder you like instead of what they suggest and sell.
Onward and DOWNward,
