Anticipating depression following WLS
I know that there is a tread that's only a few days old about depression and WLS but I'm posting this anew because that tread started going into deeper depressions which most people will not experience following WLS. I've read posts in the past about surgeons who advise their patients about the possibility of depression following the surgery. The most common solutiion is to contact your primary physician and have him put you on a temporary mild dose of anti-depressants. This is usually done for 90 days at which time you are re-examined and usually weaned off them. Never stop taking ant-depressants yourself unless authorized directly by your doctor. There is no need to see a psychiatrist for this mild depression.
Bob,
I'll beg to differ with you on this one.
Any depressive episodes that last over a day or two warrants getting your hood popped open and let them take a look and see what is going on. The depression post WLS could be what triggers something a hell of a lot darker and a lot deeper.

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
This is strange language to describe a possibly serious condition. As you may know, I have been under a psychiatrist's care for the past 20 years. I didn't have a sudden case of depression following my WLS since I already had the condition. But, I've been reading about WLS and depression here on the OH site since July 2000 and the most common response about early depression after WLS has been to be put on a short course of anti-depressants.
I suppose you may differ with my opinion that someone need not see a shrink. Many primary doctors provide antidepressants. It took me several years to convince my brother to finally have a shrink prescribe his anti-depressants instead of his primary. And, he has had serious problems with depression almost as long as I have. Many people fear seeing a shrink. Getting help from a primary physcian may be easier for them.
The primary reason for this post about using meds was to provide an option to the many people who may start feeling depressed following WLS. I feel that discussing the possibility of the condition here may save someone from suffeing needlessly.
