I went to this group seminar put on by my surgeon for people who've had WLS.  Like a support group that meets once a month and has lectures on nutrition and stuff.  I walked into a room of about 60 people, and I swear I was the only male under 60 in the room.  The only other male patient in the room was pushing 70.  It was strange.

I'm 30 years old and I've had issues with my weight all my life.  I decided to get VSG a few months ago (scheduled 8/31) when I figured out that I'd have to self-pay because my insurance sucks. The vast majority of people at the seminar were over 50 and female.  They looked like hell too (I'm not picking on older WLS patients, but this particular room of people looked REALLY rough).  Not the picture of health I was hoping for.  I didn't meet anyone there that I could relate to.  I've never felt so alone in this journey than I did then.

Why are there so few of us, male WLS patients?  I see fat guys everywhere.  And heck, why do we wait until we weigh so much to do something about it?  I weigh around 400 lbs.  Some of the women I've met having surgery aren't even that big. I'm seriously considering asking my surgeon for some sort of affirmative action discount.

Really, I'm mostly pissed because I have nobody to share my new primary goal of weight loss: to bang my nutritionist.  She's so hot, it's not even fair.  She was like a beacon of hope amongst a sea of cellulite at that meeting, the only reason I didn't walk out 10 minutes in.

Welcome to the Men's Forum...We call it the locker room.  We're here for support...but man support...You won't get a lot of "Oh you poor dear"!!  More like "That's tough man...got to work on that".  More like stuff you would hear from your uncle instead or your mom or grandma.  We pull no punches.
Industry wide about 12-13% of men in the population get gastric bypass compared to 87-88% female.  That is why this site is go good.  Try talking about your prostate at the local support group meeting and see the looks you get.  Mention sports or cars they will look at you like you're from Mars.  A wide cross section of guys here (like society).  Good luck on your journey.  Brian

Well this is the spot, welcome. Yes we men of bariatric surgery are the minority. But here the guys will share all they can. Welcome to the locker room, I have found the guys here to be a great group.

Don't sweat it dude.  You'll get lots of support here.  This board is great.  My first WLS seminar was the same way.  In fact, I was asked several times if I'd already had WLS even though I weighed in at 399lbs.  You may be hot for your Nut. now but just wait......you'll soon be thinking she's a Natzi or something when she starts talking about what you can't eat.  All the while they're usually twig thin, like if they've eaten a meal in a week they'd go to overeaters anonymous.  Anyway, welcome to the men's forum.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

I've been lurking for a while.  I especially get a kick on when girls post in here and you guys rip on them. We're all in this together and all, but we've got our own issues.

Hey unidos, how you dealing with the sleeve.  People look at me like I'm an alien when I try to explain that I'm not having bypass or the band.  That and I gave my nut. a dirty look every time she said the word "pouch".  I ain't gettin' no pouch.  :)

I love this thing i have.. I can eat what I want but I have trained myself that I will not go back to those things.. 6 week liquid diet was a killer but it also acted as a clean slate for me..    I have a boat load of energy, its weird to me.. I have to calm down some days.. Dont want to get hurt.

I know the feeling all people know is the bypass or the rubber band thing..  then they say is it reversible? ...

what part of the world are you in?

Thanks for the info.  My doc only has me on liquids for two weeks before and two weeks after.  Then it's a month of soft foods.   I'm not looking forward to starting the liquids in two weeks.

I'm in South Texas.

Dude,

Greetings and welcome to the Locker Room!

Good Luck on banging your nutritionist!  She may be a ************** so proceed with caution!

FYI - middle age cellulite can turn into middle aged hottie!  My GF is 4 years post RNY and two years past the majority of her plastics.  She is in her mid 50's - I'm in my upper 40's and trust me when I say this - just cause there is a trace of snow on the roof that don't mean the fire is out in the furnace!!!  Until her I never knew a woman could have more than one ****** or move during sex!!

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

No way man, I can tell by the way she says "protein" and "moist meat" that my nut is all about the sausage, if you know what I mean.
