Military

Ok, I don't know how many of you out there know or not but for the past few years I've always wanted to join the military. I want to serve. I want to be in the USAF mainly but honestly I'll take any branch. I respect them all.

My question is did any of you know that they WILL NOT allow you even with a medical waiver to join military? I had a friend who has 2 felonies on his record and he received a waiver for it but even with all the things I've done post surgery (dog sledding, Antarctica, hiking, marathons etc...) and even notes out the butt from my surgeon and pcp they STILL won't take me. The recruiters have tired to get the waiver and we even went to congress who was unable to get the DoD to issue a waiver stating "All gastro-intestinal surgeries are disqualifies for military entrance."

Do you guys have any ideas or suggestions??????

Count your blessings. It's a sign from God keeping you from being murdered by people who don't even care or like us.

Hey everyone,
I found a way to end war. Have everyone have WLS! Yes, sadly, I knew this. There is no logical reason for this other than perhaps fear of medical cost, which I think is unfounded. Gee, I forgot, the military is based on, we want to make sure that your are in great enough shape to send you off to get killed. OK, not a lot of logic to think the military anyway. And I am a strong believer in service to the country and think there is no greater honor than serving in the military.

I talked to an Army Recruiter a few months back (at the coffee shop where his wife works).  He had said the reason they wouldn't take people is because if you had some major injuries in a combat situation, the military couldn't treat you properly in the middle of nowhere...Just what I've heard.  You could look into things like Homeland Security, local police, or Border Patrol.  Brian

Nope .. WLS is always an automatic disqualification, due to the special dietary/supp. needs/restrictions that necessarily go with it .  (think of it the same as if you were a medication-dependent diabetic   )

Maybe look into the Peace Corps?   national guard?  (if they don't have that restriction)  merchant marines?   state or federal law enforcement work?

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

HW/461 LW/251 GW/189 CW/274 (yep, a DS semi-failure - it happens :-( )

Having served 21 years in the Navy, I can somewhat understand their reluctance to accept people who have had WLS. But I retired 17 years ago and I know that they are very wieght concious now. I would think with all the improvements to the surgeries that they would relax the restriction.
