Something else WLS cures.. I wanted to share.. Long Story
I have always had swelling in my right lower part of my leg (below the calf) for as long as I could remember. I have had all the test and they came back neg. No high blood pressure, not diabetic and no doc when I lived in MD could not figure it out. So i figured I had to live with the discoloration, swelling, cracking skin and sometimes painful condition.. I cut out as much sodium from my diet and made sure i drank a lot of water..
In Oct 08, I cut my inner right ankle near the bone. Was a nick and as usual I didn't pay attention to it, life goes on when cash is involved. It grew to the size of a half dollar and became an open wound but with a scab. I have a very very very high tolerance for pain and this thing hurt. bad. I learned along time ago how to ignore Chronic pain.
Its Nov. I am working as a bar manager in a biker bar with 3 bars on the property. On my feet all day long dealing with the pain. On my days off I worked as a bouncer in another club and Irish Pub. I was pissed off all the time cause it was the way to deal with the pain, part of ignoring it. So I turned it into something else. I started to wear compression stockings for relief of the pain. It was pure murder to walk. Can't take pain killers cause they make me barf.
Dec no change..
New years eve I worked 12 hours. So I could make it the whole shift with the pain my dad said to take 2 Excedrin and 3 Tylenol boy you talk about someone loopy.
When I got home at 5am I noticed there was some blood on the sock I was wearing over the compression stocking.. I carefully removed the sock and the stocking and soon as I removed the bandage I had on it. Blood squirted out. The blood was thinner than water.. So I stood up, that was a mistake. Blood was going everywhere. I never had to tie a tunicate for myself, yet anyone else. I am hopping around my bedroom blood is everywhere I am looking for my cordless phone, cell gets no sig. I have never seen this much blood come out my body was pretty trippy.. I am getting light headed all I could think was I was going to pass out and bleed to death. So I call 911 and I see $$$$ signs I had to have them come to the back patio cause I could not walk and wanted to contain the blood spill.
They wrap me up and say you can drive yourself so you don't get the huge bill. LOL but I wait an hour to see if the bleeding stops. 1.5 hours go by and I unwrap the bandage,, LOL huge mistake.. Blood everyplace, had to use my socks to put pressure on it. It is now Jan 1st 2009, 6am have had no sleep and in the ER.. The sight of all the blood has made me hungry LOL and my sense of humor was more than the hospital staff was wanting to handle. The doc put on a squirt shield and as soon as he unwrapped me it squirted him and I laughed..he didn't They had to cauterize my ankle to get it to stop bleeding. They wraped it and say follow up with your doc.
Doc said with that combo of drugs and how thin my blood was from it. he is suprised I am still alive. WAKE UP CALL there
The next day, my foot was twice the size and the skin was painful to touch and burned. They had the bandage too tight. My foot looked like it was going to explode. So back to the ER. When I met my surgeon the first time he took one look at my leg and said what it was and that WLS would clear it up..
Jan to April I had shooting pain, constant pain, pain cause the skin was stretched from the over tightened bandage. I had to use cruise control to drive cause i could not hit the gas, I had to learn to brake with my left foot. First time I did that my truck almost did a cartwheel.
Once I started to lose weight I started to notice new skin growth. .
I only had one issue going into my surg and that was my Venous Stasis Ulcer.
I am proud to report that everything has cleared up and the skin has grown back and no more pain. It feels so good to walk without pain. I never ever want to experience that sort of thing ever again..
Wound care wanted 1500 to treat this wound with compression therpy.. I spent $50.00 a Month on Hydrocolloid Dressings. They worked so well, I used them on my incisions after my VSG. Cleared them up fast and hardly any scar.. Below are pics of my computer area.. My bedroom is 15x30 and it needs new carpet.. Looked like a murder happened.

I'm glad that you are better. Know that being thinner is no guarantee that you will not develop skin unlcers in the future. They are especially common among diabetics but other people get them too.
Back i***** I had an abrasion on my right ankle that I ingored and it developed into a staph infection. Due to that infection, I have lymphedema of my right leg ( and to a much lesser extent to my left leg). Lymphedema which is sometimes called elephantitis is the swelling of a part of the body due to a breakdown in the lymph system--from pooled lymph which carries proteing to various parts of your body. I mention this because a swelling of the leg could be from blood or from lymph but they are two different systems.
If you do develop a wound ( also known as an open sore) on your skin, you should have it taken care of immediately. If you get them frequently, you may be able to treat them without going to the wound center. My ins covers it after a co-pay but the hospital's billing dept sucks and I'll go to a different wound center next time. Basically, have your primary doc take a look at you to make sure that you don't have an infection and then you can put an ointment on the wound and dress it with a sterile gauze pad and bandages. My doc has me use a steroid ointment for minor wounds and scratches.
It is important to be aware of wounds with the nasty bacteria that are around now. You wouldn't want to possibly risk loss of a limb or even death because of an infection of a wound.

Boy you know how to get a front row seat on things. Thin blood that does'nt clot is dangerous.
Pain tolerance can fool one into complacency. this I know and I paid a price for it. Well its good you got it under control. Sometimes when I hear the words "suck it up" I smell trouble ahead.
Good luck and keep on losing

thin blood that didnt clot came from the 3 excederin and 2 tylenol... I clot good otherwise..
Glad everything is better.
A few years back I tore the tendon in my right foot arch. It has been painful ever since. Doctors had me wearing special inserts and was threating surgery if it didn't get better.
After WLS and 68lbs I am pain free abd the lump that was there is gone. Amazing how many things get better after WLS...

Glad to see you got over it, Unitedude ..
One tning though, I have had those venous stasis ulcers and they were never quite THAT "blleeding" .. Are you sure it wasn't a staph infection (as well)? were you diabetic? The swelling might also be in part due to lymphedema .. Be sure you see a doc trained in lymphedema to either rule that out or in .. If you don't, it can start getting worse in no time and there's no turning back the clock ..

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "
HW/461 LW/251 GW/189 CW/274 (yep, a DS semi-failure - it happens :-( )
never diabetic.. It is not that lymphedema. I am sure of it but I will ask my doc about it. It bled because a blood vessel broke cause the wound was dry. No staph. Swelling I speak of was due to fluid in the leg from circulation.. It is not the whole leg just under the calf.
Skin was hard and leathery. Skin was also warm and sometimes hot to touch. Now its body temp and does not hurt to or have fluid build up.
