Half the man I used to be...

Got on the scale today and realized today was the day I hit my 200lb lost post surgery mark.  Total lost to date 230.5 lbs.  Its pretty darn awesome to be half the man I once was.

Still working towards reaching goal.  Got a little ways to go but I know I will get there.  Funny thing, just when you think you've hit the bottom of the weight loss barrel, there go another few lbs.  Of course, I have no complaints in that department.  As long as the pouch continues to do its job, I am a  happy camper.

Starting to pursue plastics now.  Its still early but the insurance fight will no doubt rage on for a bit.  Hopefully right at  around the time they give up, I will be just about where I want to be to have the excess skin removed.

And today was the day I finally saw the 'new' me.  I happened to get my drivers license renewed and when I compared the 2 pictures, it hit me like a sack of bricks.  I just couldn't believe the difference.  I swear I don't recognize the person in the old photo.

All in all, I'm a happy camper.  Thanks to you Dr. Mac for giving me my life back and thanks to all of my OH friends for giving me the support to tackle this adventure one day at a time.

Glad to hear how you're doing.  It sounds like you are on a good post-op journey.  You may want to let us know what is keeping you motivated over 1 year post-op and what your exercise regimen is like and what you now eat.  There are men who are losing a lot in the first few months post-op who wonder how things will be later on.  It's hard for me to remember back to my first RNY where I lost most of my weight but I think I was starting to have fairly regular meals although they were smaller at a little over one year post-op.

Hey Bob,

Thanks for the kind words.  I wish I could say that losing at this point is as easy as the first 6 months was.  I can eat a fairly normal kid size meal now days, 12-16 oz on avg.  Sometimes its really scary how much I can eat.  Dense foods usually work really good with the pouch still but sliders I can eat all day long and never ever feel full.  I try to stay in the 1700-2000 calorie range, mostly protein and high fiber, low fat, not a lot of carbs, rarely do I touch the white stuff.  I eat six meals a day averaging 200-400 calories each.  If I stall out, I'll do a week or 2 of really low carb, followed by the pouch test for 5 days.  That usually kicks in the weightloss and I'll drop 5-10 lbs.

My day usually starts at around 5am.  I do 1-2 hrs at the gym 5-6 times a week.  My workouts vary, usually 60-75 minutes of cardio and on alternating days 20-45 minutes of weights.  Generally I burn around 1000+ calories in my workouts.  Weightloss now is really slow, about 4-5 lbs a month.  Without the exercise, the weight loss would no doubt stop completely.  As for motivation, I keep reminding myself that I didn't come all this way to let the last 40 lbs stop me from reaching goal.  I also enjoy the exercise.  There was a time in my life that walking 50ft without pain was nearly impossible.  Now, theres no pain and I enjoy moving.  The best way to truly appreciate something is to have it taken away so when mobility became difficult for me, I knew it was time to take action with my weight.  WLS to the rescue.  Since then, no regrets and no looking back.  I take each day one at a time and if I screw up (and believe me I do), I just get back on the wagon the next day.  Good luck to you in your journey.
