Men seem to lose faster than women, do they lose more as a % as well?

It seems to be true that men lose weight more and faster than women. (The women at my support group hate us men for that reason ...and they constantly remind us of that!!) But as far as % of body weight...I guess it depends on how high your starting weight is and how much you eventually lose. This is a marathon....not a sprint!!!

It seems to me that men in general lose weight faster than women.

I don't think the % of EWL are that far apart ..   Since we are generally a larger weight than women as pre-ops, we tend to lose more lbage than them in getting down to our respective post-op weights ..

I was just wondering. A Doc told me men generally do better than women and I was wondering if there was any statistical evidence. Studies usually break down the number of men and women  in a study but don't break out the results.

I do know that generally the larger you are, the faster you will lose (and I assume that applies to both sexes) ..  I lost about 40 lbs. in less than the first month alone, although a lot of that was probably fluid and the tissues removed during the surgery, I would bet  ..  I did lose over 200 lbs. in the first 10 months, which my surgeon said was a record rate for all of his patients (IIRC, he had done over 500 lap DSes at  that time) ..

Damn. 200 lbs in 10 months. I'm just a lightweight at 310 lbs. I'm gonna try the VSG and if it doesn't work revise to the DS. I can't wait to gert this thing rolling.

Congrats on your decision, and good luck to you, CK ..

Have you found a surgeon yet for your VSG?    Will it be covered by insurance, or are you going to have to go the cash pay route?

Mathew St, Laurent will do the VSG. Very sharp guy. He doesn't do the DS and didn't seem to like them much. I think surgeons would rather lose five patients to the co-morbs than lose one to malabsorption. Can't say I blame them considering the world we live in.

I could qualify for insurance but i'm too anxious to get going.

I have to admit Dr. SL is one of the sharpest looking WLS surgeons around ..      I wish I could have looked that good when I "grew down" ..

But anyway, if you really do want the DS, don't forget that Dr. Erik Wilson also there in Houston is da man for that ..    (I've heard Dr. Ferrari in Houston is doing DS now as well, but I don't know how many he has actually done to date) ..

My fav choice for DS in Texas would be Dr. Daryl Stewart up here in Denton ..  He's also one of the cheapest in the U.S. at present ($19K open, $21K lap) ..  He has a lot of happy campers on the DS and Texas forums, as well as two local support groups ..  He's also great with payment plans, financing, etc.
