"You're Too Fat For the Army, Mr./Ms. Jones"
Interesting article and personal story of one young person who decided to lose weigh in order to join the military.
It will be interesting to see if her plan works (i.e. military life helps her keep it off).
As you probably know, "natural" weight loss would be the only way she could join, since WLS is an automatic medical disqualification for enlistment:

Scary stat, mentioned, btw, as to how many applicants these days are turned down by the military due to their being too heavyy (1 in 5?) ..

That was me when I was 18.
The recruiter gave me this starvation diet to try and it was working, but I was miserable and would never have been able to keep it off.
Then I met my soon to be first wife and gave up on the idea of the military.

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
I don't know if it still tghe case but, back in tthe 80s people were being kicked out for being overweight. This was regardless of physical conditioning (yes I was one) I was lucky I only had 4 years in but there were guys with 18 19 years being discharged without pension becasue of this. I see some of the guys in the military now and I must assume they have loosened up on the regs because they are some chunky fellows.

I remember hearing tales (true?) back in the "old days" (e.g. the '80s) of the "fruit salad diet" that the Air Force would supposedly put airmen on if they gained weight after entering service. They'd supposedly be given mostly (only?) that to eat at meals until they got down to maximum allowable weight. If it became a persistent "problem", they were given a medical discharge ..
