What foods get to you??
Thought I would get a thread going about "not" goto foods. Just wondering those of you at least a few months post op, (it doesn't matter which surgery) what food don't sit well with you? What foods give you a hard time? A few of mine are all ham products. I can eat a small amount, but alot doesn't sit well. Also anything deep fried. The other is soft serve ice cream. For some reason I can eat small amounts of real ice cream. But the soft serve gives me a quick sugar and fat rush in my intestine that throws me for a loop. So post op...What gets to you?? Brian PS Most chinese food doesn't sit well either...
Before my wls I thought that all the foods I liked were going to be taboo. For a while after surgery about a year or two some things didn't sit well with me. rice tough meats etc sticky or over cooked meats. Now nothing effects me. I can eat what ever I want with little or no consequences. Now I would say sugar is my biggest foe! I dont drink it anymore but I still eat it way too much. Over all I just try to eat better everyday. This doesnt always work for me though. I still dont handle stress well at all. Have a bad day and all I can seem to want to put down my pipe is crap and sugar. Im almost five years out and weigh 210lbs. So I guess I dont have alot of stressfull days. I started at 360lbs. Good thread

My wife and I went to Cracker Barrel the other night to celebrate my birthday. This was the first time I'd eaten there since sugery. The food "sat" ok, but it just wasn't enjoyable. I was thinking that this was kind of strange, because it used to be one of my favorite places to eat. Everything just tasted kinda......heavy. I don't eat out much anymore, and when I do it's usually Mexican, and I think I've just become accustomed to not eating much fatty food.
A more specific answer to your question would be, chicken and turkey breast. Those 0% or 1% fat meats feel like wood chips when they hit my stomach.

The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
Nothing asian except egg drop soup. no breads, noodles or rice. sodas and beer history. Had to give my son the beer while fishing the other day - rare event.. Did try some peach pie and took 2 bites and that was it. Trying to sort out good choices and find a steady diet. I think at this time I need to work hard at breaking old habits. If I find out at 12 mos out that I can eat anything I better have some red lights ready.
good luck

Since I M a sugar and white carb addict as well as a junk food junkie--all in remission--I don't want to take a chance with any of them. Yesterday we ended up having lunch a lot later than I had hoped and I had a slice of home-made dark bread. I can usually have dark bread, but this tasted almost like cake. Luckily, I didn't blow my post op diet. I just got right back on track and was abstinent the rest of the day. I can accept the fact that I made an eating mistake and not blow it out of proportion like I used to do. I just made a mistake.
As to foods that I try to avoid, rice is the most troublesome. Since I count calories, I know that just 1/2 cup of rice has 200 cal and that's more than I want to waste on empty calories. Besides, sometimes rice just seems to sit. Now, I imagine some of my favorite Polish foods such as perogies would probably give me a fit, but I don't eat the white flour. And, I know that, even before I had WLS I really couldn't eat a knish--man they go down smooth and seem to re-form like a brick in your stomach. I wouldn't dare ever try one post op but I did like how they tasted.
Prior to WLS I felt like I had a body made by ice cream. At my worst, I could eat 1/2 gal per night. Post op I was lactose intolerant for about 9 mos. Eventually I was able to have ice cream pops, but I decided to give them up for the sugar that's in them. I know I can look for SF pops, but I think it's just easier to avoid them.

For us DSers, usually the bad guys are processed white flour products, rice and, if post-op lactose intolerant (I am), milk-based beverages or ice cream. These often cause bloating, gas, etc.

Frank talk about the DS / "All I ever wanted to be was thin, like that Rolling Stones dude ... "

For about the first 6 months, I had the foamies every day and somtimes a couple of times a day. Any heavy meat like chicken, pork chops, turkey, steak, etc. would set me off. That has, for the most part, gone away, but do have trouble with re-heated meat in the microwave. Had some chicken several times and now is ok, but heat just about anything in the microwave, and I am huggin the toilet trying to puck up my toenails. Fish rarely sits well, and I have tried to fix it several ways. Use to love Mahi, Mahi pre-op, but it is so dense and thick, I can't do it. Shrimp, lobster, crab, is a huge problem. Sometimes, too, I just never know, so really had to learn to pay close attention to my pouch, and stop immediately at the first sign of any potests from it. Sometimes after stopping for a few minutes, I can proceed, sometimes, it's a definate no. That was hard to do at first since before I would vacuum up stuff off my plate before I knew I had anything. You should re-heat meat in anoven, toaster oven, or ,best of all, a NU-Wave oven that you see on infomercials. I use one and it's great for cooking steak initially and just as good for reheating it since it uses convection and radiant heating. Finally, if you must use a microwave, remember that the microwave sucks moisture out of food. So, add water or another fluid to the covered container with the meat. It's not quite like boiling it since you don't need much water and you're not going to heat it for that long. If it's too watery when you are done, just drain off the excess fluid.
Over the last year I've only foamed out twice on baked chicken that was too dry. Most meats reheated in the zapper (microwave) will be too chewy and no bueno. Can usually do all the seafood I desire if I steam or boil it. Have found a local BBQ place with grilled catfish that is good - if you tell them no chipolte butter! Fajitas are excellent. Eat the meat(s) leave the peppers etc behind. Still enjoy good refried beans. Too many SF candies will give me major pouchitis! So will under cooked/runny eggs. Milk, as much as I used to like the stuff, ain't happening! Can do a swig or two but more than that - CARB COMA!
Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
I haven't dumped yet at 6 1/2 months out, but i really haven't eaten any really bad desserts or deep fried foods either.
dry meat is a killer for me, especially fish which is a shame because i used to love seafood. bread is a killer, i can have really thin bread toasted only.
