been in the hospital the last couple days
sorry I haven't checked in for a while, I couldn't get my blackberry to work with tihs web page very easily.
last saturday I was expecting to run my first official 5K with a chip and real racers.. I had done two fun runs before. I was so lookin g forward to it. I ran a light run Friday at noon and picked up my racers kit that evening. While I was picking up the kit, I thought that I may be dumping hard in that I started developing cramps in my stomach. I hadn't eaten any sugar and couldn't figure out what was causing it. It got worse as the night progressed and I was cramped up in a ball most the night hoping it would pass By race time, I knew I couldn't make it so I had my wife return the chip. I checked my temp that afternoon and noticed I had a temp so I thought maybe it wasn't dumping but a stomach flu or something. Sunday morning, I was not feeling any better and the temperature was going up to 102. I called the nurse advisor and she told me to go to the emergency room, where they couldn't figure out what was going on cause most of my pain was low in the abdomin and they had ruled out a UTI. After a CAT scan, they found the problem, I had a perforated appendix with a huge area of infection. On one hand, I was glad that it wasn't something related to the WLS (I have fears of leakage, gallstones, etc.) but they were now talking emergency surgery. I was lucky to have the surgeon on call be my RNY surgeon who advised the ER docs to hold off on that and try Antibiotics plus a procedure of puting in a tube to drain the infection. If this is successful, I would then have much less invasive and dangerous laproscopic surgery. I'll skip the procedure for the tube story, but to keep it brief, I had a very bad reaction to that procedure with severe chills followed by a psychotic episode where I was cussing at nurses and trying to pull out my lines. Boy, that was scary.
On Sunday about midnight, after this pychosis, I learned that my father died. Geez. My father was a wonderful man and so I have grief to deal with as well. I wish I could have been more of a help for my mom and family, but I didn't have much to give. So many people shot me messages about how much my father meant to them along with condolences, it was nice. I usually cried when I was alone, after everyone left. Fortunately, the funeral is May 18th and I should be able to attend if all goes well. Probably have surgery in June.
So after three days there, I am now at home, doing home care with my tube and trying to regain strength and heal.
One lesson learned: call the nurse advisor earlier.

Stephan,
On the ****ty weekend scale your is peaking out toward the top.
My deepest condolences on your father's passing. I hoed that row fifteen years ago. To be blunt, and this cliche' is old but true, with time it all gets better. At this point you can't see the forest for the trees so hang in there.

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
I offer my condolences about your father's death. It sounds like hewas a good man. I'm glad that you may be able to attend the funeral Mass. In the meantime, contact your pastor and arrange to have a Eurcharistic minister see you weekly if you are unable to get to Church. I was basically grounded following my initial RNY and a nun came to see me every week with the Eucharist and some shared prayers.
