Did you all start taking your vitamins before surg or did you start after?

I have a multi, Iron, Calcium Citrate, B-12 and B complex..

I been taking everything but the Iron and Calcium and let me tell you been feeling run down after. Sunday could not get out of bed to do much at all.

Since RNY vitamin needs are different that VSG my experience post op will not apply to you. I did however begin a vitamin regiment pre surgery. It was not as many as I now take, but I was taking a multivitamin and vitamin D with calcium each day, and B-12 once a week.

I am one of the few that is totally against vitamin supplements. I have a lot of reasons but the funny thing is that I have felt no difference since I stopped taking them about 9 months ago and my labs show that I have no known deficiencies.

I do still take a b12 supp once a month or so but I just make sure I eat a well-balanced diet and I get my checkups regularly. I know I'll probably get flamed here but that's just what I do.

I had the VSG.  I take a muti-vitamin daily and a calcium-D twice a week.  The calcium-D was added about 20 months post-op.  You need to have your blood and urine tested to see if you need to take anything.  Be careful, as you can take too many vitamins!  I would question the need for the B-12 and B complex supplements--- are they needed?  Remember we are eating normally, just smaller amounts of food and the problems caused by the bypass are not found with the sleeve.  So test!!

My guess is that it's not the vitamins but that it's the restricted calorie diet.  Now that I'm on some post-op shakes that are more calorie-dense, my energy level has jumped back up dramatically.

My nutritionist had me on the vitamins (all above except B complex) prior to surgery, but I had to stop all vitamins, herbals, aspirin, etc., two weeks prior to surgery to get them out of my system.  I'm of the firm belief that while protocols from surgeon to surgeon vary, there are reasons they do what they do.

Call your Doc's office and ask them and then do what they recommend.

The first thing I did was put a call into the docts.  I asked here shortly after. I am waiting to find out.

I discontinued them. I am taking just the multi and for once I don't feel like chit.  The Nut put me on all those.

So I talked to my NUT today... I have been taking the vitamins and feeling like shat, throwing up and sick for the last few weeks... Well they gave me the instructions that say start taking 4-6 weeks before surg.   They were wrong, I am on a liquid diet and should not have been following those instructinos..

Thanks for telling me... she said you start those when I start soft food..
