Lap Bands and Metal detectors????????????????????????????? Yesterday at my support meeint a topic came up  that I never thought of before. Has ANYONE ever set off a metal detector in the airport before????????????????????????????? What do you do??? I am planning a trip to visit a friend in Italy in the fall and now I'm concerned. I mean I wouldnt mind a strip search if thats what has to happen (hey its their eyes) but, I dont speak Italian and I would HATE to have to try to explain my situation. One of the ladies mentioned a card..WHAT CARD. I didnt get any card should I ask???

I doubt there's enough metal in a lap band to set off the metal detector maybe the hand wand but if it does they will pat down the area wear you alarm to clear it .  I wouldn't worry about it just let them no its there, medical implants area dealt with on a regular base so all airports should be skilled in dealing with them.

The lapband isn't made of metal. And I doubt it would be detectable even if it was.

I think surgeons and sugical equipment cos. have enough sense to know not to implant anything in a patient that is made of a magnetic metal (or at least I hope they do), at least in the last 20 years or so ..

Not just for that precise reason you mention, but, more importantly, in light of the commonplace use of MRI scanners nowdays ..   The magnetic field of an MRI machine is strong enough to tear even the tiniest piece of magnetic metal right out of the body, no matter where implanted, with potentially fatal results for the patient ..

My pacemaker is metal.  It was originally put in in 2002, and replaced about 2 1/2 years ago because the battery didn't last as long as it should have.  I can't go through any metal detector, have an MRI, or even be exposed t the magnetic field from a running  auto engine. Not supposed to be exposed to any magnetic forces. Even supposed to only use my cell phone on my right ear.

I worked for TSA 3 years. If you are that worried about it. You can request a pat down search.  They will do a head to toe pat down police style.  People that have new hip and knee's,  that sets it off.  The machines detect metal mass.

If they don't speak english point to your heart..  People with pace makers/ defibulators can not walk through the machines it may trigger it to go off.

The card if from the doctor.

I'm trying to get my brother (he's been out of work for awhile now) to get a TSA job like as an airport screener ..  He was a commissioned security officer many years ago (= licensed to carry a weapon) but has been working as a non-commissioned officer the last 7 years or so for different security guard cos. (he never renewed his commission).

My bro has been looking into TSA work, but notices that they all seem to carry weapons at the airport, so he suspects he would have to go through commissioning school here all over again in order to get a TSA positiion.   Is that correct, or do they have unarmed officers too?

Also, w/o a college degree or former military or law enforcement experience, how hard would it be for him to get a TSA job?      He's 54 y.o. too, so I hope that doesn't work against him.

FWIW, my surgeon showed me a lap band just like I had implanted, and it had no metal in it.  I have also gone through metal detectors several times since surgery w/no problems.  You should be OK.  Not sure what the card is, either.
