For me, setting short and long term goals and then going after them have been THE primary success factor in my losing weight and then maintaining over the past 3 years. I struggle daily, like I am over the past couple of weeks, with eating right and getting in enough exercise. It's not enough to say my goal is to never get back up to 500 pound ever again. I need to set smaller goals which allow me to accomplish this overriding objective.

When I was still in the weight loss phase (6-9 months) following WLS, I set specific eating and fitness goals. Here they be:

Current Nutritional Goals (tracked in FitDay.com):

Total avg calories per day: 1600
Total avg protein grams per day: 150 (40% of total calories)
Total avg carb grams per day: 150 (net 125) (30% of total)
Total avg fat grams per day: 50 (50% good fats) (30% of total)

Fitness Goals:

Goal 1 - 30 minute brisk walk every day: doin it
Goal 2 - Bike 50 miles a wk: kickin' ass-put in 135 miles last wk
Goal 3 - Pump iron 2X wk: failing and I've got the twigs to prove it
Goal 4 - Moab Bike Tour: March, 2006 - Missed, work issues
Goal 5 - Elephant Rock Colorado Bike Tour: Done - AWESOME!!
Goal 6 - Tour de Cure Diabetes Century - August 26, 2006 TOUGH!
Goal 7 - Buffalo Bicycle Classic - Sept. 10, 2006 GO BUFFALOES
Goal 8 - Ride the Rockies Bike Tour: Summer, 2007, missed lottery but did it in 2008 - SPECTACULAR
Goal 9: RAGBRAI Great Bike Ride Across Iowa: Summer, 2007.... nope but 2009 with Team Tour de Fat

My goal for TODAY: don't eat crap tonight while watching the boob tube and get on my bike and ride my 20 mile training route.

What are your goals for today, tomorrow, 3 months, 6 months........?

Other than being fat, I didn't have any co-morbiditys.  So I have goals, but luckily other than overall health, none of them are related to existing medical conditions.

What I would like to accomplish daily
Food:
#1.  keep calorie count at or below 800 calories until I reach goal, then adjust to be able to maintain goal weight.

#2. Eliminate snacking from my life.  It is still one of the biggest contributors to making goal #1 difficult.

#3.  Get my liquids in.  I really need to work harder on this.

Fitness Goals:

1.  Consistantly be able to run 5k distance
      A:  Without stopping
      B:  increase speed
2.  Complete a sprint triathlon (see above)
3.  Complete a 10K run without stopping
4.  Complete a bike ride in excess of 50 miles
5.  Complete a 1/2 marathon
6.  Complete an Olympic distance Triathlon
7.  Complete a 1/2 ironman
8.  Complete a full marathon
9.  Complete a full ironman

#4: Size XL shorts
#5: Completing a spinning class
#6: Keeping my depression under control

My other goals:
#1: Reaching my goal of loosing 140 pound
#2: Avoid snacking
#3: Keeping a daily food/fluid journal
#4: Keep going to the gym on a daily basis
#5: STOP going grocery shopping and buying like I did when I was over 300 pounds
#6: Get back on my skates. I used to be a competitive roller skater and miss it greatly. Back in the spandex I go!

November of 07 my sister the nurse told me about a procedure that had been effective in treating diabetics. Effective to the point that insulin dependent diabetics were getting off insulin soon after surgery.

I made up my mind at that very moment that I was going to try.

I had never considered weight loss surgery.

So. That was my goal and it still is my goal.

1) I want to get off the insulin so I  can live to see how my college age kid turns out.

(Don't get me wrong. Losing to my pre-insulin weight would be great and I think it will happen if I can get off the juice.)

I echo slowoldguy's response.

I'm a light weight, but the damn diabetes is whats gonna get me. I too was clued in on the fact that many diabetics are off insulin/meds after surgery.

My goal is to dance at my grandchildrens weddings.

Wow. Grandchildren's weddings? I sure hope you make it. That would be very cool.

When is your surgery? What kind are you getting?

I am getting RNY - scheduled for 8/19.

I really am sick of the diabetes. I have had it for 11 years ,started on insulin 2/08.

Grandchildrens wedding - yep. And my 2 boys aren't even married yet!! So I am in it for the long haul with all of my fingers and toes intact, full sight, full kidney function, and a healthy ticker! Let's pray this thing does what it is supposed to, and we live long enough to be a problem for our children!
How about you?

Unfortunately I've been insulin dependent for 7-8 years. Diabetic 13. And I've always been a huge user of units. I think I must have fried something. ;) I've got the usual suspect kidneys, glaucoma, some areas of the eye that are "not so hot", feet well...that's enough. That's plenty enough for now.

I gained my weight once they took me off Rezulin  and moved me to Avandia (about 30), then it really went through the roof with insulin (about 110). Just got out of control.

Hi Group
1.  Well My first goul is to retain my fob since Jan I have been restricted to light duty due to back   pain and size. They are really getting testy and 11-06 for a surgery date dosen;t help much.
2.  Loose 200 lbs and get to 230 still over weight but good for my body.
3.  Be able to walk over a quarter mile without back and legs cramping so badly I have to stop.
4.  Reduse the cost of pain medication to a tolerable amount. currently takeng from15 to 25 meds per day for pain.
5.  Be able to lift and carry grandchildren without fear of hurting them or me by falling.
6.  Get blood pressure under control without taking such large doses of medications.
7.  Never get the leg ulsers like my father lived with for the last 6 years of his life.
8.  Be able to take care of my own hygene without pain and being able to use most restrooms instead of just handicapped.
9.  Be able to wear regular order uniform at work instead of the special order catagory that I am in now.
10. The ability to go to the grocery store and keep up without looking for a place to sit.

Yea I guess these are real mopey goals but when this disease we all suffer with hits you in the face every time you look in a mirror the glimmer of weight loss in the future seams sort of out there.  I went to the store yesterday with my wife and grandchildren and I thought I would not make it through the first store major exhaustion and discomfort. If it wasn't for the cart maintaining my upperbody weight I know I wouldn't have make it.
When I saw the Dr. for my surgery in June I asked for surgery as soon as possible because my daughter is getting married Dec 20 and I was hoping for a september date like they thought in the meeting . I wont have testing until October. I guess 430 lbs at 5 ft 10 in isn't that urgent, but to me of course it is.  Thanks for letting me vent
