Scale

I do not have a scale at home and want to get one prior to surgery. Right now I weigh myself at work when no one is looking, but only think about it about once a month. When I get home from the hospital, I'm sure I'll be checking it out daily.

So I want suggestions for a good, accurate, adequate capacity home scale. No bells and whistles needed.

Thanks.

Hello

I think scales early on are just evil...... I would have drove myself crazy with one in the house earlie on in my wls. I weighed every two weeks outside of the home for the first two years. Now having said that as time went on I bought one and used it daily. It was for more of a maintance issue for me. So I just bought a plain digital scale from wal-mart for about $20. Now this is just my sugestion and it worked good for me. You will feel better seeing the results every so often than on a daily basis. It made me feel really good every so often to step on and see 6-10lb loss every two weeks oposed to .5 to .0lb loss on a daily basis.

Hope this helps and good luck,
Derrick

I agree with Derrick. I only just recently bought a scale now that I'm almost two years out. I'm glad, too. I used to weigh once a week at the gym. I still only weigh once a week, but I got one that checks body composition. I'm tracking % body fat now instead of weight.

If you haven't, get your % body fat checked before surgery. I didn't, and I really wish I had.

Opinions vary, but the scale really helps me stay motivated.  I would suggest a good digital scale so that you can get exact amounts.  Mine measures to the nearest tenth of a pound and I believe I got it at Target, but you can get them most anywhere.  Just make sure you get one that will weigh up to and beyond your current weight.  I bought one several years ago only to get it home and realize it only weighed up to 300lbs, no good for me at that time.  I'll be 5 months out next week and I still weigh once everyday in the morning.  Good luck to you!

I can recomend Tanita HD-351. I bought them on line in Jan of 2007 for $60.00. Well worth the money. I have three other digital scales that every time I step on them I get a different weight. Drove me crazy. I don't remember who but some one here recomened them to me. I thought they were kind of high priced but if you figure the cost of the other three they would have been cheaper in the long run. I think they weigh up to 450 lbs. Tanita is the brand my surgeon uses. Do a search at amazon and you should find them.

I too would suggest only weighing once a week and writing it down. I have a monthly planner that I record it in once a week. I can look back from the day of my surgery and tell you what I weighed at every weekly interval. Been 19 months and I still record it, even though I have been at goal for quite a while. There were times that I thought I was stalled but when I would look at my calender I could steady progress.

I so agree with the majority.  I had a pair of scales out and was driving myself crazy weighing everyday, so I had to put them up and only weigh once a week.  I have read others that do weigh themselve every day, but, of course, that is what works for them.  A couple of years ago, I bought a digital scale off e-bay that goes up to 450 lbs.  They have some that go up higher if needed.  This seller sold new scales.  The one I bought says the weight, but has a switch that can turn it off.  I liked that because my big stomach doesn't let me see the numbers, or feet, or....
But what Craig said interests me.  How do I get my body fat checked?

I had not thought about the body fat analysis. I know some of the Tanita scales will also measure that. I wonder how accurate they are, and if that added feature would be worth it.

I have an "official" balance scale at work that I can use daily, but it's in a public area, and I don't get on it unless I am the last one in the office.

Looking forward, I think seeing the almost daily change of the first few months will be the reward for putting up with all of the rest of the discomforts!

I think you're  right about getting one as I said Im only in the SUPERVISED plan stages of the game. But, getting that scale was one of the best things I have done. It keeps me more honest to myself and  REALLY helps me stay motivated.. I HATE pulic weigh Ins..  Anthing you purchase for home use really isnt going to be exactly as accurate as the one at the doctors office. Even as good as some of them are. There is also the factor that even with a HIGH capacity SCALE it might be hard for some of us to get a truly accurate weight at home for a while no matter how good the scale.. At least you will know what direction you're going in. Anyone you choose will give you an idea of how much you have lost and gained. I say go out and purchase the best one you are willing to spend the money on and that should work well for you . But the ones with the body mass calc are in my opinion the BEST. There is even a hand held one I thing also from HOMEICS that I have heard give an AMZINGLY accurate reading and you dont have to worry about weather or not it supports your weight or not. It uses sound waves or something that pass though you hands and SOMEHOW does the calculation that way.  I wasnt able to find that one.

I am still in the intial phz of insr approval going through the sprvsd diet right now. I think that a scale is a good idea.. I didnt thinks so till I got about 3 weeks into the diet. Right now the biggest thing is finding one that will weigh us BIG BOYS and when you do you will find that they can be quite expensive.  But, after looking into an comparing  quite a few. I found one.. Homedics 540 health station was one of the least expensive retailing at about 56.00 at Linnes and things.
It messures your weight as well as calculates you body fat and water the other nice thing is that you can set it for YOU. It will track your progress and it will accomidate up to  400 pounds.
I have found that is one tool that Im using right now that KEEPS me MOTIVATED.
The only thing is that its not as accurate as I would like it to be. But anthing more accurate would mean ALOT more money. I personally wouldnt spend over a 100.00 for a scale but, you can get a VERY NICE one also HOMEDICS for about 150.00 that has WAY more bells and whistles.. Its even has an LCD screen that you can mount on the wall. Makes it nice if your belly gets in the way.
