Straws are problematic during the first month to six weeks, while you're swollen internally. Once the swelling does away, things get better.
I have 2 different Camelbacks that I use regularly without problems. When properly set up, you don't get gas unless you fill it with something carbonated because the fluid flows by virtue of the collapsing bladder, not (direct) atmospheric pressure like with a straw.
