Good Morning Guys My question for the round table is relating to fitness. I'm coming up on five months post op and I wanna start to tighten my midsection, possibly without joining a gym just yet.  Can you guys give me some exercises I can start to do to tighten up my chest and stomach. As well as tell me of a good ab exerciser I can invest in? I've been looking into the Red ab exerciser and the Ab Coaster. Are they any good? Lavelle

Hey L, If you're 'just starting,' the usual advice is- Start Slow. I have an Old post about getting a slow start- Beginning-from-0-exercise An awesome site that has step by step programs Complete with video samples of the exercises being done correctly is at- http://www.exrx.net/Beginning.html it's ExRx.  A really complete Exercise Site. The gadgets to work the abs seem to be mostly designed To make money, rather than build abs. I was lucky in that my chest drew up completely with the weightloss. Keep Up your losing, and adding in more exercise to your life in general is the way to keep it off. Best Wishes- Dx

Hey Lavelle, For ab work,I use an exercise ball and do front crunches and side to side (left elbow, right knee) every day. I also do leg lifts daily. I've used a bunch of the ab exerciser things and have found the exercise ball to be most effective for me.  Here's a link to some other ab workouts you can do with the ball.  http://exercise.about.com/cs/abs/l/bl_core.htm For chest stuff, I do pushups. Best of luck, Boner

My thanks to DxE and Boner.  These are both excellent exercise sites.  Boner's link goes right to About.com's section on Ab exercises, but you can go to the links listed in the heading about it on that About.com page and go to other exercises.  For Example, I linked to the Beginner's.  Thanks again.

I had open RNY at age 49 and am now 51.  Flabby skin minimized by walking which led to jogging.  Not fast just doing it.  I started with going to the end of the driveway and back after surgery those few days.  That progressed to registering on a challenge to do a 10K.  I was at 3 months and had 3 months to prepare.  I built up to walking 10K in 2 hrs and by race day, I finished in 1 hr 34 minutes and jogged 2-3 miles off and on.  I tried jogging at 3 monhts and at 295 but started getting shin splints, so I backed off to walking.  After getting down to 266, I could jog and have been ever since.  No gyms, no expensive equipment other than clothes and shoes.        Now for my abs, I do an exercise I read about that is suppose to be real efficient and it has my vote.  You suspend yourself with your elbows locked out like you are gong to do dips but instead of dips, you pull your knees together and bring them uip to a sitting or higher position.  I do 2-3 sets of 20 witha little break in between, especially with my warmup stretching before a run I'll do a set, stretch my legs, then do another set. Best of luck.  Do what interests you and excites you about doing it regularly. Doing something is the most important part.
