How many Calories / Protein are you getting in?

Hey Guys, I am 3 months post op.  Currently weigh 362.  Have lost 71 lbs since surgery in April and 24 lbs prior for a total of 95 lbs.  I am averaging around 1200-1500 calories a day and between 90-140 gram of protein with 8+ glasses of water.  Trying to stick to the 30-60-90 rule (30g fat, 60g carbs, 90+g protein).  Does this sound ok?  The nutritionist at my dr. pretty much stinks and doesn't have really good answers.  All they will say is to eat until you are full and listen to your body and not worry about calories.  It just seems like a lot of calories per day.  I looked at some of the numbers for other WLS posters on thedailyplate.com and thpse folks are saying they are eating 700-800 calories per day.  Unfortunately most of the posters are women so I can't make a good comparison.  Just looking for some good honest feedback.  Thanks...Dalton.

I'm almost 2 years post-op. I'm consuming about 1100-1500 a day, and get in 100+ grams of protien in. And I feel like I'm constantly eating. To be honest, at three months, I don't know how you're getting that many calories in.  I couldn't have at that point.  I have a hard time with it now. But - if it's working for you - keep it up!  Sounds like you have a good handle on it. Good luck!

First off - Awesome job so far - Keep up the great work!

As for your question, I have received conflicting information from various dieticians, so I tend to follow the one associated with my surgeon. She told be that while protein is king when it comes to what one should eat, there is no firm rule on how much is required - It all depends on your bloodwork results.

I am just a bit further along than you, and due to my physical activity, I have been told to eat about 1000 calories / day, and once again, protein should be where most of these calories come from. Based on your post, your intake is in this range (about 1000 calories / day = 270 Fat, 240 Carb and at least 360 Protein for 970 calories minimum) and your results thus far speak for themselves - Your surgeon should be really happy with you - No worries

1200 to 1500 sounds excellent. I’m at 5 years out so my intake is not for loss But maintenance.   I shoot for 2200 a day. Usually I get somewhere between 2000 and 2300. Sounds like you are doing great. Keep it Up! Best Wishes- Dx

Sounds like what your doing is working for you so keep it up!  I'm 7 months out and getting about 60-70 grams of protein per day.  Doc says I'm doing fine.  NUT says do more protein!

I am a month or so out and my nutritionist is always on me to eat less.  I am at about 600 calories and about 50g of protien.  She wants me about 300-450.  Not sure what it will be in a couple more months when I am 3 months out though.

I am 4 months out and I am lucky to get in about 600-900 calories per day.  I do try to get at least 50-80 grams of protein in per day - I am now limiting myself to one 30g protein shake per day (this is my doing - I am trying to get the rest of my protein through regular food).  Now I will say this, I am only getting in a net intake of 300-400 calories per day because I work out like crazy = at least 2.5 hours every day, except for Sunday.  I walk/run 4-5 miles on those days, plus I hit the weights for at least an hour doing circuit training.  I am losing weight like crazy and am very happy with my progress in doing it this way.  Good luck.  Ultimately, you have to do what your body says works for you.  In fact, I  like the advice about listening to your body when it says it is full/hungry - each person is different and you will have 30 people tell you something different on these boards.  My surgeon said to listen and feel what my body tells me - long term this is the best and healthiest thing to do.  It will make you feel normal in terms of trying to re-adjust with the real world and the other people in it - which you will have to eat and dine with at some point.  My body definitely tells me when it is time to quit eating - if I don't listen, I get sick and throw up - it only took a couple of times to learn my lesson early on after surgery. Good Luck, Taz

I am a little over a year out and have the same problem. I havent gone back to my surgeon in almost 6 months for that reason.  That and laziness of course.  I need to get my bloodwork done, but I just dread going there.  I am down like 150, and feel good, but still really dont know how to eat properly. I really dont even measure calories anymore.  I just try not to eat crap, and always get protein in, and if I dont feel I have enough, I have a protein drink  (50Grams with 200 Calories)

I'm 7 months out and I'm one of those guys for whom the restriction isn't really that tight and I'm also one of those guys for whom the hunger pains came back relatively quickly. I checked my daily plate records and during the month of June I avgd 1852 calories and 123 grams of protein per day. After reading what some of the guys have been talking about on here in terms of the importance of protein in prompting your body to lose weight, I'm gonna try to get my protein grams/calories ratio a lot closer to 1/10 than what they have been. I'm fixin to experiment with trying to keep my protein  in the 120 grams range while dropping my calories down into the 1300 - 1500 range. I only lost 11 lbs from 5/26 to 6/26 so I'm thinking I probably need to change some things. I dang sure don't want to waste the window of opportunity. When I was 3 months out I was at about 1200 calories per day also.
