I am planning ahead for the day I get my open RNY surgery and would like input from the forum regarding how much time they took off from work for their procedure. Any input would be helpful.

I had my procedure done Laproscopically and I took off 5 weeks from work (I had the time coming)  I was actually feeling pretty good about a week after surgery and my wife had her surgery about 3 weeks after I did and I was taking care of her when she came home from the hospital.

I took 2 weeks off after lap RNY, but about 4 years ago I had open abdominal surgery for Cancer, and I was off a full 4 weeks.  I felt like I needed most of it. Scott

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!

I have scheduled 4 weeks off for mine... my case manager through my insurance will help me if I need more, but I think I'll be back to work in less time than that...

I too had the open RNY.  I took 3 weeks off but should have taken two.  I was ready to go back.

I took 3 weeks off because I had vacation. I was walking a mile the third day and driving the fourth. I could have went back the next week but i have to heavy lift off and on all day. So i took the three weeks but I just walk alot. Good luck. Ken

I had open RNY 12-7-07 and took 4 weeks off.  I could have returned to my desk job in a week, two for sure, but why?  I had the disability time available and used it to capitolize on walking and sipping, getting my protein in and changing my eating routines.  When I returned to work I had my schedule of food, exercise, vitamins and meds down to a science and it has served me well ever since. I think that is a more valuable use of the time as far as my employer is concerned, too, as I haven't missed a day since. CB

I took a total of 11 days for RNY surgery. it was a little tough at first. I took 4 weeks for my gallbladder because it hurt so much more for some reason. I did not even use medical for the RNY. I used vacation time. I did not want to work to know I was having surgery.

I planned to take 2 1/2 weeks off after open RNY, but ended up taking 4 weeks. Then I came back half time for two more weeks. I think I could have come back after 3 weeks, but I was still quite tired and really enjoyed those afternoon naps. Joe

Echo the other open RNY experiences. I was off three weeks and was ready to go back 10-14 days out.
