OT- Abscessed tooth - what a pain in the . . . mouth!
OK, so we took the grandkids (7 year old grandson & 3 year old granddaughter) to Orange Beach last Saturday for a short 4 day vacation. My grandson went with us once before about 3 years ago, but our granddaughter had never been. My daughter (their mother) and my sister went too. Anyways, we left out Saturday morning around 8:00 a.m. On the way down there, I bought some beef jerky to chew on - lots of protein. So on about the 3rd piece, I get this jolt of pain in my upper right molar. Like an electric shock
- hurt like hell for about 3 seconds, then gone. About 2 hours later, I have some more jerky and the same thing happened. I decided to forego the jerky after that. After arriving at the condo, we unloaded everything and the wife and I were sitting on the balcony enjoying a cup of coffee. That tooth started to hurt a little bit - just a dull ache - so I decided to turn in for the night at about 11 p.m.
At 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning I was awakened by severe pain - and I mean severe! I looked in the mirror and the right side of my face was badly swollen. I knew I was in deep do-do. 400 miles from home, Sunday morning, in a beach resort town - just great.
I called every "emergency service" dentist in the phone book and got nothing but recordings saying leave a message and we will cvall you back as soon as possible. I left messages - they didn't call. Finally at 1:00 p.m. I called my dentist back home - left him a message about my delima, and prayed he would call back soon. I was seriously about to drive to WalMart and buy a pair of pliers when my dentist finally called. He immediately called the Orange Beach Rite Aid and gave me a prescription of antibiotic and hydrocodone. He also made me an appointment with an oral surgeon for Wednesday morning when I returned home. Got the meds about 30 minutes later and after an hour the tooth settled down. One of the "emergency dentists" finally returned my call at 8:00 p.m. His advice was to take the meds my dentists had prescribed and have the tooth extracted when I returned home. WOW - what a help that was!
Anyways, with the help of the meds, I made it until we got back home Tuesday night. Wednesday morning at 9:00 I was in the oral surgeons office. He examined the tooth and advised me it had to be cut out, which he could not do until Thursday morning. So after another day of pain I had the tooth cut out Thursday morning at 9:15. Took him 15 minutes to do it. When I came to, my mouth was a little sore, but nothing like it had been for 4 days. Friday I returned to work, thinking everything was soon to be fine. WRONG!!
Started getting a dry socket - which hurts as much as the dam abscess does!! More antibiotics, rinsing mouth with warm sal****er every 2 hours, and hoping the oral surgeon won't have to pack it next Tuesday when I see him again.
Now I ask you . . . would you call that a vacation??

My parents keep telling me that you gotta be a tough sum***** if you're gonna get old. Sounds like you're getting lesson 1 in that. I just hope with that tooth missing that it doesn't **** up you BwaHaHaHaHaHa. I'd hate to see how you'd have to spell some kind of a hairlip sounding laugh.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
Sorry to hear about the teeth problem, Bama. I've got to have 7 teeth pulled (4 wisdom) and I'm currently trying to get implants covered under major medical insurance due to WLS. I've taken excellent care of my teeth but the damage happens fast and furious. According to the dentists, looks like the increased acid buildup in my mouth has been eating away my teeth since WLS. Best of luck man, I feel your pain.
