International travel: Meds and precautions
I travel internationally frequently. And, I have been to India many times.
I travel mostly in the larger cities, so I have not needed malaria meds. However, I have many vaccanations for various things like tyhpoid (for flood prone areas), tetnus/diptheria, quadrovalent mennogitis, etc. If you visit a site like http://www.internationalsos.com, you can get some advice on what might be needed for the region you are traveling in.
If you don't have supplemental insurance, that company can provide it at a good price. The medical evacuation coverage is particularly good. India is not known for good medical service. And, they re-use needles. So, if I get sick there, I want to be evaced out asap.
Avoid the water. Drink only sealed bottled water. And, have them open the bottle in front of you. Do not accept a bottle that has been opened already. I also recommend eating at only five star hotels. It is worth the price. It is risky to eat out. You might also want to take snacks with you.
I have been traveling to India for about 21 years. The first time I visited I was really sick. But I have been so cautious that I have avoided illness.
Good luck.
