Hi Guys, Here is the url for American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: http://www.soard.org/  The website offers a free pdf document that summarizes state-of-the-science info regarding bariatric nutrition. It's technical but worth working through. There are charts of supplement needs and so on. Very, very interesting. Here's a teaser quote: "One popular myth is that only 30g/hr of protein can be absorbed. Although this is commonly found in both lay and some professional reports, there is no scientific basis for this claim." Also, info regarding relationship between protein sources and amino acids, and more. Go to http://www.soard.org/ and click on the yellow oval to get this comprehensive report. I think this one is a cut above lots of the stuff we find.

Looks like an oustanding resource. Thanks Doug.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

You're welcome. I read the report yesterday and think it is much better than a lot of the stuff we see. But not being an expert, I plan to reread it and see what others say.

Thanks Doug!  Great resource.  I have been asking protein questions over the last year and have gotten many different answers on the 30g rule as well as the negative comments about protein shots and the usefullness of Cologen protein.

I finally involved my daughter, who has a Ph. D. in Kinesology.  She posed these issues to the people in her lab, many of whom are well schooled in protein absorbtion, and the consensus is the 30g rule is BS (scientifically) and that any kind of protein as a SUPPLEMENT to a regular diet is perfectly fine.  In other words, you would not want to try to live long term just on bullets and water, but to supplement a diet, it is as usefull as any thing else.

Thanks again for the info.

Hey Lou, You're welcome. It's good to confirmation on the protein info from your daughter's colleagues. I think I've been cheating myself of some protein by following some local advice not to go over 25g at one meal. I have a great supplement (ProComplex) that provides 50+g at only 250 cals that I'm adding back as a meal. We'll see how it goes.

What a great resource. I really appreciate reading from referreed journals on things that people often "spout" about. Thanks for the great resource. I forwarded it on to all my WLS friends.

Glad to be of service neighbor (I'm up in the Redding area). I too like getting info from refereed journals.

Doug,

Thanks for the great information!  I have already passed it on to a friend of mine.  I have gotten about a third of the way through and can't wait to fini****  I will be keeping this in my "library" for future reference.
