Protein Bars?

I just got out of an email session with my nut and she suggested I look into getting protein bars (I'm not getting enough protein in).  What do you guys think about those? I've seen them I guess in stores but I've never thought about getting any.  Thanks for your assistance.

I love 'em.  In fact, I'm trying to break a habit of having one daily.  But that can be an extremely convenient way to add an additional 20g of high-quality soy and/or whey protein. The South Beach Meal Replacement Bars have 19g of protein and 200-or-so calories.  Most of the carbs come from maltitol, a sugar alcohol.  EAS also makes a killer protein bar with 17g of protein and a bit more calories (240). /Steve

Why so many damn calories? haha I guess that's not too bad though, for how much protein is in them.

I know: I begin to feel guilty if the protein/calorie ratio isn't at least 1/10, and these are a little worse than that, but not too much worse. /Steve

I figured I could eat one bar a day and get the rest of my protein from food...that should be reasonable, I just need something supplemental to my food intake because it wasn't equalling what it should you know.

Hey Lance, I have tried the South Beach bars that Steve was talking about and they are terrific.  I have also used a protein bar called Pure Protein.  They have 19 grams of protein and about 190 calories.  If you like beef sticks there is this product called OS Trim.  It is made out of beef and ostrich and has 14 grams of protein and only 80 calories.  Hopes this helps a little.  You have been doing great.  Keep it up!!

Thanks! I'm going to go to Wal-Mart later and see what I can find. I'm not sure about the beef sticks yet....don't want to hurt the pouch, but that's an interesting idea though...ostrich, eh? haha

Oberto makes a 97% fat free beef jerky that's great, too, and available pretty much everywhere. Beef sticks (pepperoni, etc) tend to have a lot of fat in them and that can be hard to take - the protein trade off for the calories / fat just isn't worth it. We've also got some jerky from specialty shops (Big Bear, CA has a couple of them) that are made from Ostrich (Mostly beef with a little ostrich in it) and a few other exotic meats.   They all tasted good and went down fine, but nothing (IMHO) is as good as Oberto.   But then, I grew up in Kent, Washington - about a mile and a half from the main Oberto factory, so I might be a little biased.

From a nutrient standpoint, lean beef jerky seems like a great choice.  I like it.  But when I mentioned it to my nut., she seemed to think I was gonna blow out my pouch or something.  Seems to me, if I chew the snot out of it, it's good protein!

Exactly.  If it was going to "blow out my pouch" - that would have happened to me long ago.   Just chew the crap out of it.  Then chew it a little more, and you're good. Hell, I almost treat it like chewing gum. Only I can swallow it, and the surgeon doesn't break out in hives when it's mentioned.
