Unexpected Fart

Like most of the rest of you guys, I hear a lot of compliments on my weight loss from well meaning friends. My response is to thank them but politely point out to them  that I'm still a very heavy old man. My response is usually something like, "Thanks for noticing but I'm still 25 lbs heavier than I was when I was a starting offensive lineman in college.......and they called us the cellulite curtain back then." It's pretty hard for newbies to believe but you kinda get tired of fending off the bull**** But yesterday I was laying in the hallway floor dipping the water out of the cake pan that I've put under the air conditioner to catch the leak that I'm to cheap to have a plumber come out and fix, and my younger daughter walks around me on the way to her bedroom. I didn't think anthing about it, but here in a minute she says, "Dang Dad, you've lost a bunch of weight. Last summer I would've had to wait until you finished down there cause you took up the whole hallway when you laid down there." Those are the kinds of compliments that feel really good. 100% observation of the obvious - 0% blowing smoke up my ass.

One of my buddies was commenting on how good I was looking, etc and I was thinking to myself "opposed to the trainwreck I obviously was 3 months ago, right??" I hate it when people say that I'm "lookin' good" and whatnot because firstly it makes me even more self-conscious and secondly I feel like well f**k what did I look like before to you people, some behemoth?? But I definitely understand how you feel haha

I hear ya. My boss' wife the other day was shocked to find out that I still plan on losing another 80 or so lbs. She goes on about how "skinny" I am now. I'm telling her, "Thanks, but I still weigh over 290, so yeah, there's plenty of work left to do here." But inside I'm thinking the same thing you are, "Jesus, how ******' bad must I have looked to her 6 months ago." And she was serious. She's way to gullible to be able to bull**** anybody else.

I understand about the blowing smoke part.  My family started complimenting my on my weight loss a couple years ago while I was struggling with various diets.  The problem was they complimented me even when I was gaining.  I wonder as I am starting to really lose whether the same lines will sound as hollow.

I agree, Fish - the sincere observations from loved ones are the best. My daughter leaned her head on my shoulder this afternoon and said, "Wow, your shoulder is really boney." That was pretty cool. Joe

I'm not completly tired of hearing it yet, I'm only 2 weeks post op, but ya sometimes it bugs me. I need to see it for myself. Yesterday I finally did. I was BBQ'n for the family (I call it therapy since I can't eat solids yet) and I was carrying in a tray of chicken. As I walked up the back stairs the shorts I had on (that didn't fit a month ago) dropped to my ankles for all the world to see! Now I know I've lost a ton of weight (almost 60 lbs)!

JFish, You know, it really is the kids that get you sometimes isn't it? My 4 year old nephew spent the weekend with us, and this morning when I was getting dressed he looked up and said "Uncle John, your shirt is too big, you need to get a smaller one." That was better than anything and everything I've heard from the people I work with the whole time since surgery. Congratulations!  Have a great week. John
