I Know It's Richard Simmons, But .. (New Hair Transplant Tech.)

If you can get past him ...   this is from a magazine article actually about a new hair transplant technology that is in experimental stages but works for 2/3 of men ... and only requires 120 hair follice grafts instead of the usual 10x that amount ... :  * * * * * * http://www.thatsfit.com/2008/06/18/crash-diet-renders-richar d-simmons-bald/?icid=200100397x1204438518x1200186731

You know, it's funny, but my early-onset of male pattern baldness coincided exactly with one of my first serious weight loss attempts (which causes its own, unrelated hair loss): between junior and senior years of college--the same damn year that Richard Simmons reports!  I went from 230# to 135#, but I also saw my hairline start receding, and that never ever stopped! This was way before minoxidil and Propecia, and the dermatologist I saw at the time was even balder than I was. I suppose the bright side of this is that I couldn't have cared less about any WLS-related hair loss this past year! /Steve

Speaking of which, Foobster (and I'm glad you chimed in on this topic)   ..  do they know yet exactly what causes the post-op WLS hair loss?   I heard so many things at the time of my surgery ..  Some said it is the relative shortage of potein intake and/or absorption following surgery ... others that the general anesthesia causes the "fall out" (although I know a lot of people that have had G.A. before and not experienced hair loss afterward) ..  I have even heard it is caused by a deficiency of biotin or zinc in our systems following surgery ..     ugh!

> do they know yet exactly what causes the post-op WLS hair loss? Well, it's not any of the crap that you hear repeated elsewhere on OH. Basically severe caloric deficit causes hair follicles to fall out sooner and enter a dormant phase longer.   If you're trying to lose weight at post-WLS rates, there's no way to avoid this, at least with the usual potions, shampoos, and megadoses of biotin.  SURE, if you don't eat anything, skip your protein, and do everything else wrong, you might lose more hair than someone completely virtuous, but really, any benefits of most of the voodoo-remedies shared on OH and elsewhere are simply superstitious nonsense.  They "work" only because the hairloss is virtually unnoticable to anyone other than the worrier herself, and she only resorts to "treating" the problem shortly before this self-limited physiological phenomenon stops on its own. "I drink 256 oz of water a day, I take all my vitamins, I swallow 150 grams of protein, and I STILL can count the hairs in my hairbrush!!!  Was it because I took a sip of Diet Coke?" Gad, it doesn't take long to get completely fed-up with this complaint.  At least guys don't post about their fears of catheterization 10 times a day every day! Given the nature of WLS-related hair loss, it would make sense to me that prophylactic use of topical minoxidil should help (as in, even before you start losing hair), but I've never seen any studies of its effects during periods of rapid weight loss. /Steve

The chicks are afraid of being catheterized? We got longer plumbing! Gimme a break.

Interesting that the hair loss is a bit of a mystery...

No, the guys are afraid (justifiably! ) of being catheterized!  You see at least 1 or 2 posts a month here on the Men's Forum about this. What I mean is that compared to the FEAR out there that men have, the volume of posts worrying about it is very very low and infrequent.  Compare this to the dozens of "hair loss" posts from women you see every day on any of the OH boards that aren't the Men's Forum! /Steve
