An un-FART day yesterday

I went to the gym yesterday, and really tore up my routine. I did one pass through the weight circuit before riding the virtual reality bike I'm so fond of. I worked so hard that I was soaked when I was done, and my MP3 player was full of water. I had to change the battery in it at work, and about a tablespoon of water drained out and onto the leg of my pants. Yu-u-u-u-ck. I'm a non-insulin dependent diabetic, and my drug dosages were recently modified. My Actos dosage was recently raised, and Actos and I don't get along very well despite the fact that it does wonders to keep my sugar down. I'm at my desk at work, diligently running my little empire, when I start to feel hungry. I ignore it, because usually the hunger sensation will pass in about 15 minutes. Not this one. it kept getting stronger and stronger, and I realized I was having a hypoglycemic spell. Usual treatment is to eat something, so I broke into my lunch bag a little early and ate my chicken and cottage cheese, then waited, No relief, and the hunger was getting truly painful. I headed to the other building to the vending machine and bought some cookies. Over the next half hour, I ate about half the package (yes it *WAS* small), and that did the trick. The painful hunger subsided to the more usual dull hunger, but I was left feeling vaguely yucky the rest of the day. To make things worse, concurrent with the hunger, my right berry was feeling like someone had a hold on it with a set of channel lock pliers, and the pain was radiating up into the right side of my abdomen. To shorten this up, it hurt bad enough and about half of the symptoms were present for appendicitis, but without the signs of infection. When I got home, I gave myself a bit of an exam. No fever, good. Pain in my lower right abdomen, and sensitive to the touch. Left berry, fine, Right berry itself, fine, but the muscle wall was painful. Most comfortable with my right leg bent at the hip. I took a nap, and the general yucky feeling was a little improved when I got up. Still no symptoms indicative of infection. A lotta crap went through my head before I figured it out. I'm yucky because my sugar was still low, and the pain downstairs is a strained groin muscle. Tylenol helped a lot. The groin strain still twinges a bit today, but it now feels like a run-of-the-mill pulled muscle. That'll larn me to overdo it at the Y.

What's a "right berry" or a "left berry"?  Serious question; I'm not trying to make a joke... /Steve

Uh, that would be a testicle; from the expression, "The ol' twig and berries..."

Steve,

As one of the smartest scientific guys on this board, I am shocked you don't know the euphemisms for "testicles". ;-)

I had never heard of it either.  Years ago I asked my cardiologist if I should be on the "BRAT" diet for a couple of days?  He had never heard of it.  But all the nurses had.  Brian

OK, I'll bite (again).  If you're from Wisconsin, the "BRAT" diet would mean nothing-but-bratwurst, but somehow I don't think that's what you mean! /Steve

From Wikipedia...Brian  The BRAT diet is a historically prescribed treatment for patients with various forms of gastrointestinal distress such as diarrhea, dyspepsia, and/or gastroenteritis. The BRAT diet consists of foods that are relatively bland, easy to digest, and low in fiber. Low-fiber foods are recommended because foods high in fiber may cause gas, possibly worsening the gastrointestinal upset.[1]

A well-balanced diet is best even during diarrhea, but studies have found that incorporating foods from the BRAT diet can reduce the severity of diarrhea (see Contrary medical advice). Applesauce provides pectin,[2] as does toast with grape jelly.

The BRAT diet should include additional protein supplements such as tofu or protein pills.

BRAT is the mnemonic acronym for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast, the staples of the diet.[1] Extensions to the BRAT diet include BRATT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast, and Tea) and BRATY (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast, and Yogurt).

They also call 'em "dingle-berries" in Dixie.
