Cross-Addiction
Another thought is what we use to replace the thought impulse of eating. Addiction or not.
Early on, when I started feeling weak, and wanted some garbage food, I'd tell myself to walk my block (1 mile). When I got home I said I could eat it if I wanted to still. I don't think I ever did.
I have been addicted (?) to running in this process too. I ran three miles every day. Days that I missed for one reason or another, I was pissed all day long and would either try to get over it, stay pissed, or go running really late at night.

We just discussed this at my last support group. The guest speaker defined addiction as a compulsive behavior that changes the natural chemical balance of the brain.
Physical Addiction: disease of the brain
Psychological Addiction: Behavioral patterns that are developed and rewarded by the compulsive behavior
Symptoms of dependence/addiction
Tolerance, withdrawal, loss of contorl, persistent or unsuccessful efforts to control or cut down, a great deal of time spent in the activities, important activities are given up or reduced, continued behavior despite consequences.
Casusation is unknown for addicition but the following maybe contributors: Genetic predisposition, social learning, psychological, spiritual.
Some of the types of addictions include: Food, alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex and shopping or spending.
Food addicition is viewed by many scientists as a disorder like alcohol and drugs. Food addiction can be defined as the complusive use/abuse of food.
His term was Addiction Transfer and he defined it as trading one addiction for another. He said estimates are that 5% of bariatric surgery patients experience an addiction transfer such as: alcoholism, compulsive shopping, drug dependency gambling or sex. He said sex addictin is the least talked about.
Of course the first step is to get professional help. Treatment should address medical, pyschological, social, vocational and legal problems.
If you go to a support group this would make a good topic for disduccion. It did at mine.
