Everyone is different, but with the type of activity/surgery you are talking about, I would say probably after 2-3 weeks you could TRY to get back into hunting . I would go slow at first, and wouldn't schedule any all-day hunts at first. As far as food, you would need to basically follow the plan the doc. gives you for the stage you are at. There are plenty of options (especially when you get further out from surgery) that can be packed in a bag or cooler and eaten in the truck or even in the stand. Just remember, it may put a hurting on you this year, but next year you'll be 100% better and can climb the treestand with no problem! Good luck to you.
I had my lap band on 5/12/08 - right at one month ago - and while there is nothing in season right now where I live, if I wanted to, I have no doubt I could go right now with no issues. Right now, I ride my ATV, bush hog with my tractor, and hike in the woods with no discomfort from surgery at all. I waited about 10 days past surgery to do any of this stuff. I started jogging on a treadmill at this point, too, and at about 14 days after surgery, began working out on a bowflex. I used to be a bowhunter, but gave it up several years ago, and right now see now reason whatsoever I couldn't pick it up today if I wanted to. I haven't shinnied up a tree in a while due to my size - the 2 climbing stands I have at home do not recommend weights over 250 lbs - I feel I could go right up a tree if I was just a little smaller.
As for the eating on stand part, I can tell you that within 6 weeks after surgery, you should be able to eat a wide variety of foods, but you probably know this already since you have been researching the surgery. I am just now getting to that point so I can't quite recommend anything yet. Do you pack a cooler to take with you? If so, anything full of protein such as greek yogurt, tuna salad, Atkins shakes, V-8 juice, etc. are a good start. I pack stuff like this right now for lunch - oh, and don't forget the water. The goal is to eat small but eat high-quality. I haven't found much yet that didn't have to be kept cold, though.
Hope this helps out!
