Hey Guys
I'm back again asking the same question. I had my visit with my surgeon today. I thought it went rather well, He ask me to lose 10 pounds to prep me for surgery. Here is my problem. He ask me what surgery do I want to do. I just dont' know; between the Lapband and the RNY. I have heard both pros and cons for both procedures. I just don't know what to do. Any Ideas?
I know it can seem overwhelming, but you will probably hear this over and over, it really is a decision you have to make for yourself.
Only you can decide which is best for you.
Keep doing your research and decide which is going to best fit you.
Sorry, I know that isn't a lot of help, but it really is the best answer to this question.
I had rny 10-04 wt 502 was admitted to hospital 10-06 wt 158 lbs. I was DYING of malnutrition and dehydration. I had to have a rework and was in the hospital for a month. All my body hair and 50 percent of my head hair fell out. three teeth came out the dentist said the roots just let go. RNY is not reversible you can NEVER EVER EVER EAT NORMALLY AGAIN IF YOU EVER GET INTO A REAL SURVIVAL SITUATION YOU WILL DIE AS YOU CANNOT DIGEST ROOTS GRUBS INSECTS OR MOST RAW MEATS. This was the biggest mistake of my life. If you truly feel surgery is the only way then go with the lap band because it can be reversed if needed and it doesnt **** up your internal plumbing.I PRAY THIS WILL SWAY YOU AWAY FROM WLS TOTALLY...but like I said earlier lap band it.Hope this helps....

Steve, I'm truly sorry you had so many nutrition problems. But I do not believe your experience represents the vast majority of WLS patients, whose lives have been, in fact, SAVED by WLS.
As for 'real' survival situations: I weighed 442 at the time of my RnY. It was only a matter of time before my ability to survive on roots, grubs, and insects would have been a moot point, because I would have been dead.

I really hate when people say you can never eat normally again.
Isnt that the reason that we had the surgery in the first place? I mean, I am sorry you had some complications, but the majority of people that have the RNY have minimal issues.
Eating normal is something you need to identify as something new. I never want to eat the way I used to.
I have never heard a survival arguement as something to not have the RNY. Thats impressive. Do you have facts to back up your huge red font?
I would rather die than eat grubs and insects, but thats just me. I guess if you like them, then more for you.
And my internal plumbing is not "****** up" as you so gently put it.

wow, I lost 150 Lbs. Thats impressive RNY works.

what, are you the next host of "Survivorman" or "Man vs. Wild"?
FWIW, the RNY CAN usually be reversed 100% if needed. If for some reason the lower (remnant) stomach has atrophied (which CAN sometimes happen) then at least the intestinal portion can be revised to allow for more absorption if there's a nutrition problem. Dehydration is a matter of insufficient fluid intake, not a fault of the procedure.
whatever... sounds like you're having a bad time of things... I really hope things get better for you.
