just wondering if any of you are bowlers and if so, how soon were you able to return after surgery? I throw a 16# ball and am on 1 league, hate to miss out but I don't want to be in pain or risk damaging anything. I'm getting the VSG next month. Thanks, Dave

Dave, Most docs recommend no strenuous exercise or strain for the first 6 weeks.  Certainly ask your doc up front. Advance exercise slowly, starting with walking and add in lifting and swinging heavy B-Balls later. Nothing good about an incisional hernia. 6 weeks passes faster than you’d think, Particularly when those first 2 weeks are spent feeling like “hit by a bus.” Once the weight starts dropping, you’ll find all activity is so much easier. Best Wishes- Dx

I am a year out and I cant use my old bowling ball anymore, its too heavy.  I havent been lifting nearly as much as I should, which is most likely the reason, but I need to go from a 16 down to a 14 or so.

For laparoscopic surgery, typically 2 weeks is the restriction; open is about a month.  Even without consideration of the lifting restriction, you're going to have serious stamina issues for a month or so with either type of surgery. I was restricted from lifting more than 15 lbs for 2 weeks, but I could ride my bike as soon as I felt like it. I tried riding a couple of block about 5 days out, and I ran out of gas very quickly. Lap RNY, FWIW.

Dave,

I think every Doc has his own rules.  My Doc did not want me lifting anything over 10 pounds for 4 weeks and 25 pounds until I was 6 weeks post op.  The best thing is just to ask your Doc.  I know we guys are quick healers, but the surgeons really know what is best.

Good luck with the surgery, I hope it goes smoothly for you.
