Strawberry Fair 5K run

Well, I made it. Ran the 5K for our local fair today with my daughter. She kept me going and helped me push through. We finished at 40:05. I had set a goal to do it in 40 minutes or less, so I am ok with that time. Next year we shoot for under 30 minutes. I have been a slacker the last month and did not train nearly hard enough, but we got through it. One funny story. There was an announcer near city hall set up to call the parade. We were walking from a couple blocks away and we could hear him talking **** He was saying something about how it was supposed to be a run, why are they walking. I took it in stride, no big deal. My daughter on the other hand, was really pissed. She turned to me and asked me how much weight I have lost. I told her and as we went by the announcer, she ripped him a new one. She yelled at him, "Yeah, well my dad has lost 190 pounds and is running 3 miles. What are you doing besides just standing there talking into a microphone!" My eyes started to well up. To his credit, the guy announced what she said and told everyone to give me a big hand, which they did. Then he said he couldn't have run to the next block, let alone three miles. As we got to the finish line my daughter took my hand and we ran across together. I was tearing up and bawled like a baby when we got across and I gave her a big hug. It was the most amazing feeling ever. Thank you guys for the support and help through this incredible journey. You are all truly inspirational. A special thanks to Chad. I didn't break any records, but I made it brother. Thank you! (Oh, notice my running number? I took a page from Chad's book and when I registered, I asked for the number 405. That is how much I weighed when I had surgery on November 9th, 2007. No press release or fanfare, but the lady that organized it did grant me that and got me the number I asked for.)

Great Fart! You don't look like a distance runner yet. But you look damned good.

I liked the line that the announcer said that he couldn't walk to the next block.  Heck, I have difficulty just walking 50-60 ft.  I assume that your daughter's number has no significance as far as her weight.  Yeah, I understand your special request for your number.  You've got one helluva daughter who sticks up for you and is proud of you.  It's great that she ran with you. Keep up the good work.  You're one of the inspirations for many of us.

Way to go man.  It's a shame that there was someone on the mic that didn't have a clue.  It's nice when they keep it positive.  Anyway, keep it up.

Gary that's awesome man!   Congratulations!

It's not about the competing or the winning man.   Hell, I finished DEAD LAST in a triathlon I did a week ago.  You ARE a winner by taking on the challenge to run and complete that race.   You beat the course.  That's what matters.  Most importantly that moment crossing the finish line is YOURS and it's something you will never forget.

People that don't train or race just don't understand and unless they do train and race they will NEVER understand.   I try to explain it but it never seems to come out right.  I do triathlons and long distance running because I CAN.  It's about the nerves.   It's about the wind in my face when I run.  It's about the sand between my toes before the swim.  It's about the training.   It's about running in the rain.  It's about the PAIN, it's about the EXHAUSTION, it's about the mental and physical FATIGUE.   It's about theamazing rush of emotions that I experience when I cross the FINISH LINES...  It's ALL about the FINISH LINE!   Bet it felt good didn't it?  :)

Once again, congrats man.   Helluva accomplishment!  Pat yourself on the back dude.

Awesome job man. I can relate to the emotion upon crossing the finish line. It happened to me during my first 5k.
