Concerning sun exposure and malabsorption

So I'm about to go tubing on the Boguchitto river (sp??) this weekend and I was wondering how you guys feel about too much sun exposure? How does it affect us now after surgery opposed to before the surgery, etc. Also, if anyone knows about RNY malabsorption I would love to know. Like how much do we malabsorb or what percent of food do we not absorb, etc? Thanks gang!

RNY on 03/24/08 with
I had open RNY on March 24th and was told to wear a shirt for most of this summer as the new skin in/on the scar is very tender. I can't help you with your malabsorption question.

Sun exposure and RNY? Nothing.... Other than use sun screen and don't burn. Sun damaged skin is less resislient and less able To "draw up" as the weight is lost. Other than that? No issue stemming from Mal-absorption of nutrients. Toward that topic.... The best info on mal-absorption I have seen tossed around is from  a study done in 2000 in Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Let me summarize the important stuff: DS’ers Showed a 81% Mal-Absorption of Fats. RNY’ers Showed a 38% Mal-Absorption of Fats. Both Showed an ‘Average’ 9% to 12 %Mal-Absorption of Proteins, And Both absorb >97% of Starches and Carbohydrates . Compared to those who have not had surgery or a non-mal-absorption procedure- Non-Ops Showed- 8.2% Mal-Absorption of Fats and >98% of Proteins and Starches/Carbohydrates absorbed.
Have a Blast Tubing!!! First big water adventure since surgery? You may (as other have) Notice that you don't float quite as well as you used to..... Best Wishes- Dx

Aww man I know, I've lost 86lbs I hope I don't have any trouble haha Thanks for the info though, I was kind of worried about being on the river all day but I guess as long as I drink plenty of fluids I should be fine. Thanks again Dx!

I used to wonder, and have asked on OH before, if we have less skin surface area with our lower weight, if that means we have a higher concentration of melanin (sp. ?) which would mean maybe we now tan easier or darker than we did as a pre-op?     I never did get an answer to that question though .

Atty, absolutely, at least with me, I tan much darker now than I did with an extra 250 pounds.  Of course I am a total beach bum, I spend most weekends there and cut out of work early a couple of times a week to hit the beach.  Total sun bunny here. John

Don't know anything about the increased risk of sun exposure but.... "tubing on the Boguchitto river" sounds like a blast!! Have fun, Lance! Boner

At first I didn't see any link between RNY and sun exposure, but then a red flag went off. Don't forget that we absorb less fluid, too. Be sure to hydrate more than you normally would on the river.

Yeah thanks, I'm precipitating that and bringing plenty of water/propel etc with us (we bring an ice chest when we go)
