My RNY gastric bypass is scheduled for Tuesday May 28th and i am starting to get really nervous and sometimes i even feel scared.  I know that what i am about to embark on is what is best for my health and my family......but it is still a little scary.  My wife totally supports me and i love her so much, i just hope that i make it through the surgery and that first month and then i know i will be o.k.  Thank you guys for listening and for all the help that i have read on this forum.  you guys are the greatest and you give me inspiration to become a healthier and happier individual.

I was lucky. Once I made the decision to have the surgery I never looked back and was never nervous about it. That is not to say I don't understand where you are coming from, after all getting ones intestines re-routed is a serious undertaking and there are some risks. Just keep in mind that the risk that something will go wrong is minimal. Keep the faith and go fishing, or as mentioned earlier clean the garage or some such.

Hey Dude, I know exactly what you are going through.  I'm only 2 1/2 months out so the fear of the unknown is still very fresh in my mind.  Some may disagree with me, but at this point I would put the surgery out of my mind.  I'm sure that if you're at the point where you have scheduled the surgery, met with the surgeon, done all your preop work, etc. it's safe to say that you are sufficiently educated about the procedure.  What I did in the days leading up to the surgery was just NOT think about it.  Even going into the hospital that morning, I was thinking about mowing the lawn, watching my son play baseaball, anything NON-health related.  If you spend the next couple of days thinking about it and googling "gastric bypass' you're going to make things alot harder on yourself.  You'll be fine... I'm like the poster above who wasn't nervous at all. I was never nervous, but I understood exactly what was going on. I had seen the operation online and was totally prepared. It's really not that bad at all. It's just like doing all those things your doc has told you to do over and over again over the years but it's made a LOT easier to do those things because you'll have a smaller stomach! Good luck, we're pullin' for ya!

I can relate, I was nervous and scared going into the surgery but I always knew I was doing the right thing for me.  I was concerned about what may happen to my family if something happened during surgery but I also knew the chances of something happening during surgery were minimal compared to what would happen if I did not have the RNY.  Even the first couple of days after coming through with no complications I kept thinking that the hell did I just do to myself. I am now 4 months out, down over 100 pounds.  Working out 5 days a week.  Feeling great. Not falling asleep while driving on my 70 mile commute to and from work.  Eating healthy and proper portions. Unbelievable change from a few shorts months ago. No regrets on my end. Best of luck and follow the doctor’s orders. Tom

It is natural to be nervous before your surgery.  As the others have said, try to put it out of your mind.  Distract yourself by working, reading, etc. If you have done your research, and reached your decision by weighing the alternatives carefully, then you should be fine. The only regret that I have with my RNY is that I did not do it sooner. Good luck.

Hey guys thanks for all of your suggestions and support.  I have been keeping myself pretty busy, doing yard work, cleaning out the garage, etc....but i still find my mind wandering about the surgery.  I know that i will make it through and join you guys on the losers bench real soon.  Thanks again!!

Dude, Okay to be anxious about what you are about to go through but have faith in God and your Dr. abilities to do your surgery and every thing will be fine. Remember the four mantras of WLS: 1. Sip, sip, sip. 2. Walk, walk, walk. 3. If something don't feel right - CALL YOUR DOCTOR! 4. Never trust a fart!

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
