These shakes are getting old.

Starting yesterday this diet is officially getting hard. Practically overnight I just cannot stand the taste of any protein shakes. I wish I could have some cottage cheese but I'm still on full liquids. They say anything you can get through a straw, I'm tempted to blend some up but I bet that would taste horrible.

There are plenty of good blended soups I can eat but they are all way to low in protein. I had to do three protein shakes today just so I could get my protein high enough without exceeding my calories so that I could fit in a single cup of bean with bacon soup blended.

I'll get by, just whining.

I was fond of using the ‘UnFlavored’ Protein and adding a little to soup. The sweet tasting ‘shakes’ seemed WAY too sweet to me. A lot of people have trouble getting those Protein Powders to mix with stuff. Someone at my support group said she always thought it made stuff taste like someone had thrown a "Handful of Chalk Dust" in her food or drink. Well the solution? Liquid into Dry! Suppose you are trying to add some to Yogurt or mashed potatoes. Take your scoop, (or actually only ½ scoop) of the powder and put it in a coffee cup or small bowl. Get a fork, and slowly drip some cool water into the powder while stirring with the fork. Don’t try to just add the liquid. Attempt to make a very thick paste. Once you’ve got it into a thick paste then slowly add more drops and stir some more until you get a thinner paste. Keep this up until it is the same consistency as the food you want to add it to. By not having "liquid" per se, the powder can’t clump up and hang onto "bubbles." Even mixing this up ahead of time and keeping it in the fridge is good. Then just take out how much you want and stir it into your food. I had great success this way adding Protein Powder to- Yogurt, Soups, Oatmeal, Smoothies, polenta, etc… It really helps going into shakes/smoothies. You don’t get that "foam" on the top that, no matter how long you run the blender just stays forever. It also gets rid of the "powdery" texture that can hang on otherwise. This worked for me some years back! Hope this helps you! (BTW- that Bean & Bacon soup is awesome!) Best Wishes- Dx

Have you tried making a smoothie? I use chocolate EAS protein powder and throw it in the blender with some skim milk, 1/2 a banana and/or a few strawberries. Makes a huge difference in the taste and you can certainly get that through a straw. Hope that helps....

That protein crap just got to me after a while so I stopped drinking it altogether. Now I eat eggs, cheese, turkey, carnation instant breakfast with skim milk, and lean cuisine/smart ones/south beach frozen diet dinners and I usually get all of my protein in. You're a little early in the game I see but don't fret too much, you're still a guy and you still have more muscle mass than the women folk do I just figured I would wait until I could actually eat food to get the protein in because the shakes were just disgusting. Good luck to you though!

My Doc wouldn't let me have protein supplements until I got to solid foods, he said I had enough stored up to last the couple of weeks.  Have you tried lentil soup?  pretty high in protein and not too bad tasting.

The way I enjoy my protein shake is that I use half water and half diet cranberry juice or low cal OJ, I add a banana, and sometimes berries or strawberries, oh...and some ice. I buy vanilla flavored Body Fortress from Walmart or Target. I like that it the blend taste very good!

You should try the IDS New Whey liquid protein "shots".  They are much easier to take than the powdered proteins.  I do the powdered protein sometimes because it's cheaper but always revert back to the liquid proteins because they are so easy and taste so much better. JP

Wasn't there something recently that those IDS things don't have very absorbable protein and you don't get the full benefit from them?

Myself, I've found the only protein thing that I like are the EAS cafe caramel.. I find myself looking forward to my breakfast of it.

Eric, On the New Whey shots my surgeon's PA last week at my six month suggested that you don't want to do the whole tube at one time but split if half and half.  I tried one that way and so far no dumping.   Don

Those protein bullets are lacking in tryptophan, an essential amino acid. Unless you find another way to supplement with it they're useless. Nobody realizes they are useless because your body will just use your muscle for the protein it needs and since we're all eating so little people aren't surprised they feel weaker.

I'm doing soup with unflavored protein powder right now, but it isn't tasting that great. I do the liquid to dry but I'm to the point that just smelling it mix up is turning my stomach.

I may just up my calories a bit. Or drop my protein, the ratio is what is killing me, trying to get 80 grams of protein in only 800 calories. I know women who are 5'4" are getting 600-800 calories a day so it's probably a little strict for me. I may bump my window up to 800-1000 a day, just until I get off of the liquids.

Being able to eat foods closer 30% protein instead of 40-45% opens up a lot of doors to soups and blended foods.

I sipped a 50 Gram Slam from GNC all day (270 calories, 50 grams of whey protein) which allowed me to do some pureed potato, bacon, and cheddar soup. Yum.
