Just though we could get a dialog going on this subject.  I didn't really eat much fruit (small amounts, 1-2oz...2-3 times a week) between 3-6 months out.  When I hit goal I added more to my diet.  That could have been a mistake.  So when should fruits be added to post WLS patients?  Do you dump on certain fruits?  Are certain fruits no nos like watermelon or pineapples?  Are certain fruits "good carbs"??  I'd just like to hear your thoughts on this subject...Hate to see all that good fruit go to waste!!  Brian

I'm about 6 mos out and haven't eaten much fruit yet either. But I bought some dried prunes yesterday and ate about a dozen of them. I hear they'll help you keep the discharge vent working properly and I'm looking for all the help I can get in that area. JF
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

I haven't figured out the fruit thing yet. My diet list says to eat fresh fruit but others tell me it will cause dumping.

Work is for those who don't know how to fish.

Since my potassium was low at my 4 mo. labs, I've made a point of having a banana daily.  (I'm on a diuretic for HBP, so low potassium wasn't exactly a surprise, now that I'm no longer drinking a quart of OJ for breakfast.) I also throw a small handful of raisins in my oatmeal before I nuke it in the microwave, though I don't know off-hand what that gives me other than some sugar.  An occasional apple, pear or plum hasn't caused me any grief. I haven't ever dumped on anything yet, not that I ever eat enough of anything at a sitting to test my limits.  I might not risk eating too many dried fruits, which are just sugar-bombs wrapped in a little fiber. Much remains to be explored! /Steve

I tried some Fruit ****tail in water with Splenda and I loved it. I ate all of the fruit except the grapes without an issue. As for just like an apple or something I have no idea. But at least the fruit ****tail is alright to eat, for me anyway.

I would love to hear some feedback on this as well. I regularly eat apples, oranges, and bananas. I figure the fibre will be beneficial and the sugar won't be harmful (in moderation). Joe

I eat a slice of high fiber toast with peanut butter and a sliced banana just about every day for breakfast and I haven't had an issue with it. I did start off with a half banana and worked my way up to a full (small) banana.

I've tried grapes (no more than about 10 at a sitting) and sliced apples with peanut butter but I haven't tried anything else yet.

I had my bypass March 20, 2007 so I am about 14 months out. I too would love to hear how others are doing with fruit.. especially with summer coming.

Great question.  I am 2 years, 1 month out and havent touched one piece of fruit since before surgery.  The thought of a nice fat juicy peach is overwelming.  I have a tangerine tree, banana plants and coconut palms all over my yard and havent touched one.  Maybe our resident guru on these types of things can post something (Dex, are you reading this??)  Be well all. Brian, I’ve been eating fruit since I moved to solid foods. No Problems. I don’t eat many grapes at once, And early on I was skeptical of the skins on them not getting chewed thoroughly, but no problems. My “Go To” fruit choices have been- Apples, pears, and all of the berries- Strawberries and Blueberries are staples of my intake. I eat at least one serving of fruit each day. I stuck to “Apple a Day” for a full year. Now I’d say it’s more like 3 to 5 a week. Not a lot of pineapple or bananas or peaches, But only because those are my least favorite. Over 4 years of fruit in general with zero problems. Best Wishes- Dx

I am with DX on this one, I am 5 months out. and I have been eatting fruit for 3 months now. I try to get one serving in a day.  I eat oranges, grapes, tanelos, apples, pineapples, strawberries, plumbs, well lots of things.  I have not had a problem with dumping or fruit making me sick. Well I think once I ate too many grapes and had that horrible stuffed feelling but that was it. I started @ 360lbs, now I am @ 5 months and I am @ 250 (down 110lbs) with 50lbs more to go.
