Dehydration

Ok heres the deal. When I came home from surgery it seemed I couldn't stay out of the restroom. Getting rid of all the water they pumped into me for surgery I reckon. Anyway for the past few days I rarely need to go more than one or two times per day. I called the doc and told them they told me to increase my water intake from 2 oz every 30 min to 2 oz every 15 min. I have been doing this for 3 days now but it has made little if any difference. I have read the number one reason for going to the hospital after RNY is dehydration. I don't really want to go there.  Any suggestions?

I'm in the same boat. My urine is really dark as well.

I'm drinking as hard as I can, I think it's just going to take time.

Myself, I'm trying to not to sweat too much in an attempt to keep from dehydration.

Hey Eric. I just noticed you and I had surgery on the same day. Not sweating is a good idea. Problem is I like to fish and getting out in the sun tends to cause a person sweat. That whole 'walk at least a mile every day' tends to make a person sweat also.

Caught 6 keeper crappie and one 3.5 lb bass yesterday. Dont know if that is a FART or not but it felt good to me.

Yeah I am not going to sweat it unless it keeps up for several days. Just wondering what the deal is.

Keep sipping … Another way to get in extra water that was helpful for me Was Sugar Free Popsicles. the water intake is slow enough that you really don’t notice it. And they help with the urge t to “Eat Something.” Hang in there, It does get easier. Best Wishes- Dx

I wouldn't worry too much about dehydration if you're managing to drink as much as your doctor recommends.  Most cases of dehydration result from extreme non-compliance (assuming you're not working in the desert on a chain gang).  Anyway, if you're not ******g the water you drink out, I don't see how you could risk becoming dehydrated.  Water-logged, maybe. IMHO, bariatric practices deliberately OVERemphasize how much water you MUST drink every day, simply because it's so damn difficult to drink the amount of fluid we NEED as it is. 96 or 128 fl. oz. of fluid a day?  For me, not a chance (maybe it'll come easier to me during the summer).  But I aim for at least 64 oz. or 2 liters a day, and if I slack off, I get terribly constipated.  /Steve

This is from my U.S Bariatic handbook.  Just thought I would pass it along.  "It is essential to consume at least 73-100 oz of water or non-caloric fluids each day.  If there is any intrruption of this pattern, caused by difficulty swallowing or nausea, you may develop several undesirable physical problems including forgetfulness, weakness, light-headedness, dizziness and nausea.  Dehydration increases the retention of uric acid and other breakdown products of protein metabolism which may increase the risk of gout, uric acid kidney stones, and urinary tract infections.  If you are unable to maintain good fluid intake for more than 8 hours, or if there is persistent vomiting, diarrhea or fever with increased perspiration, contact the office."  It is very hard, if not impossible to get in all your fluid the first few weeks.  The same with your protein.  Each day will get better and better.  Jus****ch for the signs.  Brian

your urine should not be dark in color. If it is  you have to drink more.  It's hard after surgery to get all that liquid in but ya have to do it. Good luck to ya.

Ditto to what has been said - you definitely don't want to experience kidney stones from not drinking enough fluids.  Drink as much as you can.  Keep the water near you night and day.  The fluids help rid your body of impurities.  Dark urine is definitely not good long term.  And like you, I love to fish and work outside = loss of body fluids from dehydration/evaporation.  Knowing this, I drink my tail off religiously.
