My 2 year labs

Had my 2 year lab consult with my doctor yesterday. I passed everything with normal or above, except vitamin D, which was low normal. The doc asked which vitamins I was taking, so I told her about the brand of liquid vitamins I use, as noted on my profile page. She asked if I had any further information on it, so I gave her a couple of flyers I had that showed the supplemental facts. BTW, it's also in the PDR too.  I've been taking these liquid vitamins for 7 months now, and I was curious as to how effective they were. Only pills I take are prescriptions. Calcium was in high normal range too, using powdered calcium citrate. The only vitamin supplement I use is the one ounce of these liquid vitamins daily.  B12 was normal also, so sub lingual B12 is not needed forever, as some believe. DAVE

Hey Dave, Sunlight = Vitamin D

Vitamin D prevents osteoporosis, depression, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and even effects diabetes and obesity. Vitamin D is perhaps the single most underrated nutrient in the world of nutrition. That's probably because it's free: your body makes it when sunlight touches your skin. Drug companies can't sell you sunlight, so there's no promotion of its health benefits. Truth is, most people don't know the real story on vitamin D and health.  Vitamin D is produced by your skin in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from natural sunlight.

  1. The healing rays of natural sunlight (that generate vitamin D in your skin) cannot penetrate glass. So you don't generate vitamin D when sitting in your car or home.
  2. It is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from your diet. Sunlight exposure is the only reliable way to generate vitamin D in your own body.
  3. A person would have to drink ten tall glasses of vitamin D fortified milk each day just to get minimum levels of vitamin D into their diet.

I know all about sunlight and vitamin D. I WALK EVERY DAY and have for two years.  This is only the second lab test in 2 years ( of which there have been 6 or 7) where I actually was in the low normal range, with a reading of 33, broken down in to D3 @ 25, and D2 @ 8.  One previous test had a total reading on vitamin D at 14, which is what I call "in the toilet".  I took 3 courses of 50K units of prescription Vitamin D caplets, with virtually no improvement. I finally made it into the low normal range taking the liquid vitamins, on this and my last lab test. Normal range is 30 to 100 units, so 33 is just barely in that range. I take my liquid vitamins with 600 IU of vitamin D, vitamin D in my calcium supplement, and one additional 400 IU vitamin D tablet daily. Some people have issues with certain vitamins. Everything is average or above except the vitamin D. Even with the high levels in the prescription form of vitamin D (one of the 50 K IU caplets once per week for 12 weeks, and then another blood test--below normal D levels after doing this 3 times), and walking outside daily, my D seems to be an issue. Dave, since Vitamin D is one of the fat-soluble Vitamins, Do you think that reductions in fat in your diet could Be hindering the transport and absorption of it? Just a thought… The Vit D supplement you use? Is it the "Dry" type? Those seem to be "better absorbed" by by-passers. And one last thought… Phosphorus Levels? That whole Vit-D/Calcium utilization thing has phosphorus Playing a key "Go between Role." Maybe look to see if your Blood tests show a lower phosphorus level. (even if it is still in "the normal range.") Awesome to hear you B-12 level news. Does your liquid Multi-Vit a lot of high B-12? Studies have shown that extreme intake of B-12 through really high concentrations in Liver and such Will get it into the system even in the absence Of intrinsic factor. Just not from normal dietary intake. Congratulations on you 2 years!! Keep it Up! Best Wishes- Dx

My 4 mo. labs showed that I had GREAT vitamin D (I take about 4000 IU a day from all my vits), fine blood calcium and PTH, but, bizarrely, low phosphorus.  No one (PCP, NUT, bariatrician) knew what that meant, or why, but I'll bet that it was the first PO4 blood test I'd ever been given. /Steve

Steve, I’ve seen someone report the same a few years back. (can’t remember exact who…or what their doc eventually came up with) I don’t have a complete clear grasp on how the phosphorus Figures into the "Calcium/Vit-D Dance" beyond that the D aids the absorption and the proper Calcium/Phosphorus Balance Is responsible for the utilization of the Calcium which is absorbed. Vit-D is the center of so much Med-study these days… improved insulin sensitivity, cancer prevention, etc… My levels were fine when last tested back in January. I have 5 year Labs/Bloodwork at the end of this month. They test me often (2 different docs, each monitoring me separately) I’ll be on the look out…. Best Wishes- Dx
