I am on my liquid diet and I am going to have a real hard time next week. I go out of town on a Continuity of Operations (COOP) Program for 5 days. I will be living out of a hotel and be with about 15 people who all go out to eat almost every meal. I plan to go to a Wal-Mart that is close so I can stock up on things I need and not have to drag them through the airport. I am a little worried about this. Most people here at work don’t understand why I am doing WLS. They think because I have lost a little during my 6 month diet that I should just continue and walk more to lose weight. No understanding of how my diabetes has been affecting me or any of the other problems obesity causes.

Any words of wisdom? Anyone been through this and maybe have a few suggestions. I will not go out to eat. I already have movies downloaded to my laptop for entertainment. (Do not want to steer at those food commercials’ on TV all night)

Hi Hans, Hans just remember that you are doing this for you and all the people who love you.  If anyone takes a whack at you simply remind them of this. Then smile, and tell them that this liquid diet you're on right now is difficult and you'd appreciate it if they would cut you some slack. If that doesn't work remind them that in about year they can just kiss your skinny ass. We have all delt with the nay-sayers and sometimes it has hurt. But that is what makes us a band of brothers. Hang in there bud, this too shall pass. Doug

Walk to WalMart a couple times a day and pick up a South Beach or other kind of frozen entree then take it back to the hotel and nuke it. Grab some fresh fruit for snacks while you're at it. With that along with your liquid diet stuff, you should be good to go eating wise.  Get out and walk around or hit the fitness center rather than holing yourself up in a hotel watching movies. This will help you avoid "being bored" snacking. Just some thoughts. Good luck, Hans. Eating correctly and exercising while traveling is a challenge to be sure.  Boner

Thanks Boner, I will do my walking but I will have to be in my room a lot VPNing into the COOP. Site is only open 8-5 and we have 5 days to bring up 30 servers and restore data and get programs up and running. I am going to watch the movies while working on the VPN. ALSO bring a bunck of MP3 Music to listen to. I cant have the food but will be getting my liquids and protein power from waly word.

When fighting off "head hunger" or in your case, Real Hunger, I used to find "treating myself" in some other ways Very helpful. In those "After work" times, splurge on stuff you wouldn’t normally. Schedule a massage? Go get a haircut and a shave? Movies are a good one too. Hotel Jacuzzi? Maybe take along some Melatonin to help knock you off to sleep Sooner in the evenings rather than laying there Wishing you could get to sleep? While you’re sleeping, you’re not eating. Yes? That "Shave and a Hair cut" one Was nearly a once-a-week deal For me, back in my first year. Best Wishes- Dx

Try to avoid going "out to dinner" with your co workers, as this is going to be a problem.  Bring protein shakes with you. Bring some healthy snacks such as almonds (in moderation) or dried peas (from health food stores, 1/4 has 6 grams of protein).  Try to take some walks while the others are eating. I was never on a liquid diet prior to surgery. My surgeon just said to make an effort to lose weight. His words were " you gain a pound, and no surgery".  String cheese in individulally packed servings is a great snack too, even though it's not liquid.  Many people complain about the first week past surgery, being on a full liquid diet. It's hard for me to imagine weeks of a liquid diet. I did that with Herbal Life products in the 80's and it was BORING. DAVE

Hay Dave, You are right about not going out. I fight that here at work every day. Tacos in the morning, big lunches, snacks Sodas. Some times it drives me crazy so I just walk the computer floor for a few minutes. I cant hav anything put the shakes and a very small meal for diner. I will be just fine. You all did it and I am sure I can as well.

Hans, Last year when i did my liquid diet my Dr. allowed liquid breakfast lunch and a light meal at night. I lost from 346 to 313 in three weeks. Early on I visited with your Dr. and as I recall his plan was simular. Last year when I started I was in Ft.Worth for four days of NASCAR racing. It wasn't easy, but keep the faith. This time next year you will have experienced the ride of your life. Welcome to the Loosers Bench!! Randy
